Author Scott Stossel A Fear of Everything
This week usatoday.com interview Author Scott Stossel about his many fears and severe anxiety.
Scott is seen as a successful, level headed leader who handles pressure well. If you met him in the street you would have no idea about his serve anxiety and phobias. Everyday people have phobias, fears and anxiety. You can be confident in one area of your life while having an irrational fear of something that others would presume you will be completely at peace with.
A senior manger for example can be confident chairing meetings for teams of high-end professionals and can even keep their cool during multi-million pond negotiations but when they have to speak in public, they crumble.
Scott himself has a fear of public speaking (as well as a fear cheese, vomiting and closed spaces) but he uses a “pre-game ritual” to overcome his fear. For Scott his pre-game routine includes a shot of vodka, but you can replace alcohol with mental relaxation techniques to get you into the zone.
As a hypnotherapist and public speaker myself I use a pre-game ritual. Before I walk out on stage I visualize myself as a confident public speaker. I see myself walking on the stage giving a great speech, hearing the clapping of the crowd and feeling that excitement feeling from knowing that the speech has gone down well.
I follow the visualization exercise with a deep breath. I clap by hands to access my anchored confidence state, jump up and down a couple of times and I’m ready to go.
Scott has recently released his second book, My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind (Knopf), where he opens the door to his mind and shares with the reader, all of his fears and anxieties.
The idea for his second book started over 10 years ago, when he was inspired by a 17th-century book on understanding anxiety, The Anatomy of Melancholy, by Robert Burton.
Scott said “I wanted to write something like that. I didn’t want the book to be a pure memoir, I wanted to talk about history and science, too. I don’t have the expertise to speak on history or science, but I can speak from my own experience with anxiety.”
