The Chameleon Technique
The Chameleon is an amazing creature, changing the colour of its skin to show fellow chameleons how it is feeling. The Chameleon show’s dark colours when angered in an attempt to intimidate other animals. When feeling broody the Chameleon will show a multi-coloured pattern, to attract a mate.
You Are Also a Chameleon!
Like the chameleon our emotions are made up of colour, but our coloured emotion is internal rather then external. What I mean by that is when we describe our emotions we can describe them as different colours.
Try it now. Remember a time you felt really confident and calm; see what you could see, hear what you could hear and re-live that confident and calm feeling.
As you re-live that feeling, imagine that you see that feeling inside you. What colour would you give your confident feeling?
Now remember a time you felt really angry; see what you could see, hear what you could hear and re-live that angry feeling.
As you re-live that feeling, imagine that you see that feeling inside you. What colour would you give your angry feeling?
Have you noticed that they are different colours? Try this same exercise for lots of different emotions, and you will find that each emotion has its own personal colour (these colours vary for different people)
Controlling Your Emotional Chameleon
This technique is fast and easy to use. When you have an unwanted emotion, you can use the Chameleon Technique to change the way you feel. As an example I teach this technique to people who feel nervous when public speak, they want to change their nervousness emotion to a feeling of confidence.
- Think about a time when you felt the unwanted emotion. If you could see this emotion what colour would you give it?
- Think about a time you felt the desired state. If you can see this emotion, what colour would you describe it as having?
- Think back to the unwanted emotion, become aware of where this emotion is in your body. Is in your chest or stomach or somewhere else?
- Imagine you can see the negative emotional colour. Imagine that above it is a big pint pot full to the brim of the positive emotional colour. Start to poor, slowly at first the positive emotional paint onto and into the negative colour.
- Watch it mix and as you keep pouring, the positive colour takes over and the more positive colour you keep adding the more positive you start to feel now.
- Keep pouring until all you can see is the positive emotional colour. how do you feel now?
