Milton Erickson AMBIGUOUS Language Patterns
One of the hypnotic language patterns Milton Erickson would use is “ambiguous” language. Ambiguous sentences create confusion and takes the person inside themselves as they try to understand the ambiguity behind what was said, ambiguous sentences will have at least two possible interpretations.
As an example “did you see the boy with the binoculars?” The two possible interpretations of this statement include “did you see the boy by looking through the binoculars?” or “Did you see the boy who had a pair of binoculars?”
Ambigious Words
Many words can be ambiguous the English language is full of words which have the same pronounication, but different spellings and meanings
- ate/eight
- band/banned
- buy/bye/by
- red/read
- boar/bore
- genes/jeans
- knight/night
- nose/knows
- their/there/they’re
Some more ambiguous sentences
– read them twice as the second meaning can become clear on the second read.
- I want you to draw me a picture of yourself in the nude.
- I seen her duck
- The lady hit the man with an umbrella
- He gave her cat food
- Prostitutes appeal to the prime minister
- Stolen lamp found by tree
Milton Erickson famously said “speaking to you as a child, I want you to imagine a time when…” The ambiguity here is whether the client is speaking using childlike speech or if the client is acting childlike.
