Many coaches are passionate about helping others; they read the books, attend training sessions and practice what they preach. But only a percentage of coaches actually get paying clients coming to them for a coaching session.

 

 

So, how do you get your first paying coaching client? Today you will learn 3 ways to increase your chances of paid referrals.

How To Get Your First Paying Coaching Client – The Voice

 

As a new coach you first need to master your coaching skills, as there is nothing worse then sitting in front of a paying customer thinking “what am I suppose to help this person?”

 

So many newbie coaches learn the 101 Coaching Tools or attend coaching workshops and then decide to accept customer referrals. First, take a step back. You have learnt the skills but next you need to become an unconsciously competent coach.

 

Practice, practice and practice. The best way to practice is NOT on friends and family but with people who want to be coached. The problem here is that many coach will think to offer their services for free to allow them the opportunity to practice.

 

When you offer free services you may get clients who are not really committed – you can offer free sessions to friends of friends or other coaches also wanting to practice, explaining that you are using the session to hone your skills.

 

But when you get to the stage where you want to coach a real client in a real coaching environment, the client looking for a free session is not always the best buy. As a new coach you want your techniques to work, to make a difference, as this will boost your confidence, experience and through reflection, allow you to develop your skills.

 

Paying clients, or clients who believe they are having a one off free session which is worth £X will be more committed. If they are willing to invest money in a coach they are keen to move their life forward.

 

This commitment on the clients part will quicken and maintain the distance travelled during the session. To offer free sessions to possible paying clients, use the voucher system.

 

You can advertise your coaching sessions as a paid service on your website but then offer a FREE one off voucher or a massive “90% discount – this month only!”

 

This way the clients you coach are willing, most likely they found your website while hunting for a paid service and most importantly, will want to be coached. As the client achieves their goals they will spread the word, and word of mouth is a key marketing system – you can even give them FREE vouchers to pass to their friends and family.

 

Once your confidence and skills have increased you can simply remove the vouchers/discount and continue with a paid service.

How To Get Your First Paying Coaching Client – Google It!

 

When you are ready to become a paid coach the easiest and quickest way to get paying clients contacting you for a session is via Google.

 

9 out of 10 clients use the internet to search for coaches. Google searches come down to 2 key components – the organic search results (see below) or the Google Ads which are at the top and right hand side of each search page.

 

You can set up a Google Ad within 5 minutes. As we said in The Coaching Business in a Box, Google Ads is the quickest way to receive new referrals. The ad needs to be specific (what is your coaching niche?) and should state the cost per session, any discounts and what you coach people in.

 

Once clicked this ad takes clients directly to your conversion/sales page which should state in more detail, how you coach clients. Interested clients simply click the pay now button and you have your first paying client.

 

Sounds easy? It is!! The only downside is that each click on the advert cost you money – Google call this ‘pay per click’. If you have a niche advert with the cost per session recorded (designed to put clients who have a limited spend per session off, so they don’t click the ad) the you should receive 1 referral for every 10 clicks.

 

So if you charge £100 per session and each click cost you 50p (10 x 50p = £5) you make £95 per client.

How To Get Your First Paying Coaching Client – The Long Game

 

You may be decide not go gamble on a pay per click marketing campaign, and instead use the organic searches to increase your referrals. On average the top 3 organic searches (the search results that are at the top of each Google page below the pay per click adverts) receive the most clicks and unlike the pay per click model, each click is FREE.

 

The problem here is that these organic search listings are in demand. To rank high on Google you have to follow these 3 key steps.

 

Step 1 – niche your coaching business. Make it easy for Google to understand your coaching business, website niche and location. This way when a customer searches “confidence coach in Manchester” Google will know that your website offers this service, helping Google to rank you high.

 

Step 2 – increase backlinks. Write blog post for other coaching websites (feel free to e-mail me a post to review for my site) on your niche topic. Add a bio and link to your site. The more links (a link if your website URL) your site receives from other similar coaching sites, the higher you will rank in Google and the higher you rank the more clicks you will receive

 

Step 3 – wait! It take ages, sometimes a couple of years to rank high enough to receive ongoing referrals which is why most coaches who brought The Coaching Business in a Box, use all 3 of these methods.
