Inside the Brain – How Does a Phobia Cure Work?
A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of a stimulus. This stimulus can be an object, environment, situation, food, animal, or well…..anything.
A phobia differs from anxiety. Someone anxious about a flight will still get onto the airplane, whereas a phobic wont go anywhere near the plane, even the thought of flying triggers of a phobic reaction.
A phobia is an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about the stimulus. There are many phobias, here area few:
- Amathophobia- Fear of dust
- Carnophobia- Fear of meat
- Chronomentrophobia- Fear of clocks
- Dystychiphobia- Fear of accidents
- Electrophobia- Fear of electricity
- Heliophobia- Fear of the sun
- Lilapsophobia- Fear of tornadoes and hurricanes
- Myctophobia- Fear of darkness
- Pteromerhanophobia- Fear of flying
- Triskaidekaphobia- Fear of the number 13

To understand a phobia you have to understand the Amygdala
The Amygdala is the part of our brain responsible for controlling our emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation. It is in this part of our brain where our fight, flight and freeze mode is activated when we are faced with danger.
When we are faced with a danger our experiences are passed through the Amygdala. First the Thalamus decides where to send incoming sensory data (the spider, dark passageway, the airplane), the Sensory Cortex interprets the data and the Hippocampus establishes the context of the sensory data.
The Hippocampus stores and retrieves memories and the attached frame of reference, the Amygdala decodes emotional frame of reference, before the Hypothalamus activates the flight, fight or freeze response.
Something that initially scares you can be forgotten, as we logically work out that the stimulus is not a threat. But phobias are always present. When in danger you can overload the sensory data which becomes trapped in the Amygdala, rather then becoming a forgotten memory.
If the experience is trapped our brain cant make sense of it and we rerun the phobic movie, only feeling the associated emotions – fear and anxiety.
How Does the Fast Phobia Cure Work?
By getting a phobic to see the pre-phobic situation in black and white is powerful, as the Amygdala needs colour to create the phobic response.
Disassociation (watching a movie of the phobic event from a projection booth) takes away the associated emotional attachment.
When you re-add the colour to the movie, step into the end of the phobic movie and run it backwards a couple of times, adding extra submodalities such as circus movie, this reprogrammes the frame of reference and emotional response to the stimulus.
Adding humor throughout the whole process helps to increase the speed of deleting the phobia.
