5 Ways Public Speaking Can Improve Your Social Skills
Public speaking is a great skill to master because the individual techniques you learn can be developed and used in other parts of your work and life.
I have attended Manchester Toastmasters for around 2 years and have won several local speaking contest. As a more experienced speaker I now mentor new members to progress through their orating skills and manuals.
What is clear is that as well as people improve their public speaking skills, the technique learnt, also help people to improve their social skills.
How Public Speaking Improves Your Social Skills – using tonality to engage your audience
Charismatic people and master story tellers use tonality to engage their audience.
Think back to the last time you were in a boring training session at work, the speaker would have used a monotone voice that sent you into a deep sleep.
Changing tonality in social situations will keep your audience awake and engaged, but more importantly a varied tone adds emotion to your words. Emotion is what engages the listener, creating intrigue in you and the story
How Public Speaking Improves Your Social Skills – using hand gestures to talk to the audiences subconscious mind
Not all communication is verbal
We communicate with words, tonality, pace and with facial expressions, body language and hand gestures.
Hand gestures and body language communicate with the subconscious. People who are nervous in social situations will often hide their hands in their pocket.
To increase your confidence and to come across more social, release your hands and let them express you and what you have to say.
How Public Speaking Improves Your Social Skills – using your eyes to engage your audience
When public speaking, it is important to engage the whole audience.
To engage everyone watching, a great orator will look at everyone when speaking. This helps the audience to feel more involved and will keep them more interested in the speaker.
When communicating in social situations use eye contact to engage the strangers you have been introduced to. Some research shows how attractiveness increases by looking into someones eyes.

People love a good story
Good stories, as authors will tell you, are full of intrigue. When introduce to strangers in a social gathering you will be asked the same old questions about your job, how you know the host and your hobbies
Plan your answers to these common questions and use an intriguing opening line to grab the attention of the listener
When planning a speech I use this technique and i’m always surprised how the atmosphere changes – you actually see the audience lean forwarded.

The best public speakers speak with confidence.
Confidence floods from the stage as the charismatic orator walks on stage, using intrigue, tonality, eye contact, gestures and their self-confidence to create impact on the audience

The answer is repetitious rehearsal. To master any skill, including social skills, you need practice, practice, practice.
