3 Steps To Get The Life You Want
People living today, live with beliefs taken from their grandparents.
It is often believed that you can only live your ideal life once you have retired. To me this concept is crazy. It was true 50, 60, a 100 years ago, that you worked only to put food on your plate, the location of your house had an impact on type of work you could apply for and with money being so hard to come by, you could only enjoy your life once you retired.
These days, for many of us, we live in a world of playfulness, where you can achieve the perfect work-life balance.
Everyone receives a free education, your qualifications can help you secure work globally and with a high income you can go on one or two holidays a year, plus several weekend breaks, and your weekends are spent completing fun activities, food is easy to come by and if your job becomes boring, you simply find a new position within a new organisation.
But with all this flexibility people still don’t have the life they desire. These 3 steps will teach you how to get the life you want.
Step 1 Understanding the key elements for your ideal life
You first need to figure out what would make your perfect life style.
At this stage keep it simple by thinking about 3 key things that would be in place if this was your perfect life. An example would “a job doing X, spending free-time doing Y and having Z”
To help you think about your ideal life ask yourself;
- What do I value?
- What is important to me?
- What is happening when I am happy?
Step 2 Get Specific
It is really important to start generically, which is why we ask the big questions “what is important to me?”
The next stage is to get specific. Many people when setting goals have a big generic goal “I want a job as a project manager” After completing their actions they achieve this goal, only to find they are still unfulfilled.
To avoid this common trap get specific. If you had the perfect “project management job” what would be happening? Would you be working in a team or on your own? Would you preference following procedures or being creative? What type of projects would you enjoy working on?
By gaining the details of your ideal life, you can create a plan to source this particular lifestyle.
Step 3 Make many mistakes
We live in a world where people don’t like to try encase they get it wrong, people will prefer to be deceitful rather then tell you they failed. Making mistakes is seen by many as an illness.
When setting a new goal, developing yourselves or changing your life style you will make mistakes. Making mistake is part of the learning process and should be embraced. In fact if you are not making mistakes, step back reflect on what you are doing and assess if you are really pushing yourself.
You learn much more from errors then you do from getting it right first time. When creating the perfect life, you need to test ideas, you may have thought you would have enjoyed A or that X would have gotten you Y outcome.
When you create a plan, an action point on that plan should be to stop reflect, look at what is working and what you need to develop. Everytime you make a mistake, ask, what have I learnt from this process.
