3 Steps To Beat Procrastination

Procrastination feels like a real barrier.

The procrastination wall in front of your goal feels to big to climb, to wide to walk around and to powerful to knock down.

The thought of the pain associated to the task you are doing feels greater the pleasure of finishing the task. It is this pain that feeds your procrastination. This pain can come from the perspective that you will look stupid, you will get it wrong, you’re not creative, intelligent or fit enough.

It is easier to do something else, something more fun, pleasurable and easier. This distraction takes your mind away from the pain but this is only short term. Later you come back to your task and the cycle repeats itself.

There are 3 steps we all need to take when we want to create personal motivation, once followed you will find you will achieve your goals quickly

Step 1 To Beat Procrastination

The perceived pain of the task “this is going to be hard” creates procrastination. The negative outcome “if I do X and its wrong I will look stupid” reinforces the procrastination.

Often the perceived pain associated to the task is wrong. In actual fact it often down to a lack of planning that creates the perceived pain in the first place.

Many people when given a task will simple start the task. After a few minutes there mind goes black, they cant think of the next step or an unforeseen problem occurs. This lack of movement towards your goal of completing the task is the start for of the pain association.

If you plan your task by breaking it down into manageable task, predicting potential problems/required resources and prioritizing each step your goal will seem easier to achieve creating motivation.

Step 2 To Beat Procrastination

Focus on the pain of not achieving your goal

Pain is a big motivator. When you procrastinate you focus on the pain of the task. To create motivation focus on the pain of not completing your task.

Have you ever procrastinated and then at the last minute you took action? This is because your pain focus change from the pain of the task to the pain of not completing the task. The strategy does create action, but last minute action doesn’t give you room for error.  Your work isn’t the best it can be, there is no time to check for mistakes and you will, due to time, take short cuts.

As you feel procrastination coming on, stop, and change your pain focus.

Step 3 To Beat Procrastination

Reward Yourself.

If you are procrastinating about a task, you are most likely trying something new or completing a hard challenge.

Once complete (or when you achieve a milestone) you need to reward yourself. This creates double pleasure – the pleasure from completing the task and the pleasure from your reward which creates more motivation
