3 Ways to Improve Your Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize your own, and other people’s emotions and to use emotional insight to guide your thinking and behavior.
By recognizing your own emotional response to a situation or stimulus, you create choice, you can decide to go with the emotional pull or to take stock and decide how you want to respond
Step 1 Your Emotions
Emotional Intelligence makes you aware of your own emotions and your emotional responce to others. Think about confidence, what situation are you in when you are at your most confident? What resources do you have when you feel confident? What environment are you in when you feel confident? What else is happening?
Use this same system for all your emotions, your strengths and your weaknesses. EI comes from self awareness
Step 2 Empathy
EI is understanding your own emotions as well as understanding or reading emotions in others. This can be achieved by reading facial expressions, gestures and body language. It is easy to respond or react to a persons communication, but your response comes only from your perspective which has been influenced by your own state.
Imagine being that person take on their beliefs, experience and values. Stand the way they stand, take on their gestures and expressions. Modelling this way gives you an insight into their thinking, realizing why they are acting the way they are. This insight can help you decide how you want to respond rather then just reacting automatically.
Step 3 Make Others Shine
Most people are caught in their own world, with the focus on the internal rather then external. Being able to increase your own confidence creates a state that allows you to be in control. With high confidence, you generally become a good team player. Take this one step further, support, encourage and help others to grow.
This positive influence on others will create a self feeding cycle; as they grow in confidence they will in turn use their own EI to encourage others, increasing your own confidence
