5 Fears That Are Stopping Your Success
Do you procrastinate? Put things off? Leave a task for another day? If yes, this is a barrier to your success. Why do goal setters procrastinate? It is the fear, that negative emotion you feel, when you think about your goal that creates a psychological barrier.
Motivation is the key ingredient for success. When setting a new goal, a lack of motivation will result in procrastination and procrastination leads to a real lack in action.
There are 5 fears that are stopping your success, once conquered you will find you will achieve your goals quicker then you believe
1. The Fear of Failure
The fear of failure, making mistakes, getting it wrong is the psychological barrier that will defeat you.
Its often not the fear of failing, but the fear of others knowing you have failed which creates procrastination. Even though you know each failure is a learning curve you still don’t take action.
Start to tell people your mistakes and what you learnt or what you will do next. This disclaimer will allow you to go out and make more mistakes, learning, evolving each time, until you become a success
2. The Fear of Being Found Out
We know our limitations. The truth is we don’t! We often perceive our limitations, knowledge, ability to be less then what they are.
Once you achieve something in the comfort of your own office or social group, the next stage is to put it out to the public. This is where the fear comes in.
Many, at this stage, will start to believe that they have been luckily, or that they don’t know as much about the niche that there “product” states they do, or that others should release the “product” as they are more of an authority then you are.
Your quality here is taking action. Even if someone knows more then you…so what! You created your “product” so put it out there. Maybe you found the solution, innovated a much needed device or had that light bulb moment. Maybe, at a later date, you will upgrade, amend or create a second version.
Being successful comes from taking action.
3. Fear of Breaking Out of Your Routine
It is easy for us, once we have achieved an initial goal, to fall into a routine.
This is fine, for a period of time. But with an increase in the speed of envelopment both in terms of technology and the “self” you need to stop, reflect and set new goals.
Success isn’t a one off. Keep learning, developing and evolving. Notice when you are in a comfortable routine and check if you need to step out and make a change?
4. The Fear of Identity
We build up our own identity, they we want others to view us, through our actions, words and social groups we belong to. This identity is who we are. If your identity is as a “successful person” you will wont want to break this perceived image
When setting new goals, you will worry that others will no longer see you as successful, as you will make mistakes on your learning journey, breaking your well formed identity
This focus on others, rather the your goal, will stop you attempting anything new. Either way your identity will change, you will be known as the person who WAS successful or the person who is pro-active, always looking new the next success, always willing to learn and try something new
5. Fear of Hardwork
Many people are lazy. This is why only a few are successful.
Every goal, every success, every distance traveled is only achieved through hard work, reflection and goal setting. Without putting the work in you wont get the desired results
If you dont want to work hard be sure you are happy with your lot. If not, set a goal, create a plan and work hard.
