3 Ways to Fill the Half Filled Glass

3 Ways to Fill the Half Filled Glass

The half filled or half empty glass metaphor is about perspective

Your perspective of a situation changes your emotional response and your emotional state has an impact on your behavior.

What you focus on you feel. If you focus on the negative perspective you feel negative, if you reframe a “negative” situation you will have a positive focus, creating a positive state.

There are 3 steps we all need to take when we want to create personal motivation, once followed you will find you will achieve your goals quickly

Step 1 Fail

You have to fail to be successful.

It is often quoted that to be success, a master at a task, you need to complete over 10, 000 hours of practice. The repetition creates mastery, you become unconsciously competent at the task.

The detail missing from this motivational quote is that amount of hours taken from the 10, 00 that is required for making mistakes, errors and failures. It is these fails that compound your learning.

We often become passionate and motivated to learn a new skill by being initially being lucky – we try a new task and do an initial good job. During the 10,000 hours you will make many mistakes, your mind subconsciously contrasts the achievements and failures which creates a new level of learning.

It is this learning from the fails that compounds your development and creates a new level of mastery.

Step 2 Perfection is Pathetic

Everyone has an identity that they want to protect – we don’t want others to see our weaknesses

You will make mistakes, you will get it wrong – this is a natural part of learning. No-one is perfect, so embrace these mistakes and use solution focus questions to generate the best learning, ask;

  • what could i have tweaked/done differently
  • what have i learnt from this mistake
  • how has this mistake improved my overall knowledge
  • when i try again, what will i do differently
  • if i was to advise someone else to do this task, what advice would best help them

Step 3 Know What You Cant Do

Remember you cant do everything.

You can learn any new skill if you are dedicated enough, but you cant know everything. To keep the glass half full become aware of what you are an expert in, what your skills are. If you would benefit from learning a new skill, discipline yourself to be educated.

With other tasks, delegate. Get others to do what you cant – this isn’t a weakness, instead its a strength. Successful business people will tell you that there success is down to hiring the right experts.

People hate telling others their limitations, but the real limitation is pretending that you are a master in everything leading to task being incomplete or being complete to a limited standard
