Change Your Stress By Changing How You Talk to Yourself
We increase our own stress levels by the way we phrase our own self-talk.
The actual words we use when talking to others and our-self has a massive impact on your emotional well being. Our internal dialog is created automatically, by taking control of the devil in your head you create confidence, reducing stress
Here are 3 simple ways to reduce stress by choosing stress reducing words
Speaking in the Third Person
Self-distancing helps you to control your thoughts and emotional response.
When stressed and anxious, you self talk in the first person “I have to go on stage and speak to a large crowd…” This language represents your association to the stressful situation. The more you focus on stress, the more stressed you will feel
By using disassociated phrases the stress impact lowers “Chris has to go on stage and speak to a large crowd…” The language you use changes your perspective, changing your response and behavior
To lessen stress, think about the phrasing of yourself talk. Become aware of the “I” you are using, and repeat the same phrase replacing “I” with your name
Commitment Words
As a therapist I intuitively know if a client will commit to their self set goal.
This is because clients phrase their goal statement differently. Take these 2 examples;
- I’m going to try and lose weight
- I will lose weight
Woulds such as “try” “maybe” “want” don’t create the feeling of commitment. By replacing these weak words with commitment statements you are more likely to achieve your goals
When feeling committed to a goal your stress levels naturally drop as you have a positive focus
Get Away From or Get To?
People set goals because they are not happy with what is happening in their life right now, they feel compelled to make a change.
The way you phrase your goal will create stress or desire. Most people phrase their goal in the negative stating the thing they want to get away from “I don’t want to be overweight”
What you say to yourself, your goal, is represented by visual imagery. This image creates an emotional response, either positive or negative and only positive emotions help you to create action
To create momentum, which creates motivation, reframe your negatively phrased goal positively “I will thin and healthy”
