Avoid Giving Up

Avoid Giving Up

As a mountain climber I know how it feels to be tiered, exhausted and ready to give up. But what is in us that creates determination to carry on, to achieve our goals.

Once you know the secrets of determination you can avoid, even delete that feeling of wanting to give in

Avoid Giving Up #1

On a large mountain, in the middle of know where, after a long day of walking up a steep hill with a heavy backpack on, it is easy for me or anyone if this situation to want to give up.

Humans when they have to can dig deep. On a mountain there is nothing I can do but carry on, if not I could potential die. To increase your motivation focus on what will happen to you if you don’t take action? How will a lack of action have a negative impact on your life, your career, your future, your happiness, your relationships, your finances, well everything.

Often focusing on what will happen if you don’t carry on is enough of a motivational push to create action.

Create a positive social group

It is easy to give up when you are only accountable to yourself. By creating a positive social group you have two wins; the first win is that a positive social group will encourage, motivate and support you to be successful.

The second win is psychological.  When you set goals with others, we are more likely to fulfill that action as we don’t like to let others down. We are more likely to back our of a long hike, gym visit or any task is we are doing that particular task alone. Compare this to a group activity. Most people will fulfill their commitment to their activity as they don’t want to let others day.

Finding a Motivational Cause

When we are working towards a goal for something we find important we will stay focus.

Many non-runners will complete a charity run because a friend or family member had just overcome an illness, and they are now being sponsored for that event. Maybe your goal is aligned with saving the planet, feeding the homeless and finding a cure for cancer.

When we feel that the achievement of our goal will have an external impact, we will follow through. Think about your goal, and ask “why?” find the bigger reason and create motivation
