The 3 Step Milton Erickson Approach to Hypnotherapy Scripts
Milton Erickson change the field of hypnotherapy for ever, later influencing Bandler and Grinder as they created NLP. Many hypnotherapist use either a direct or indirect approach when working with clients.
Erickson used both depending on the client, rather then having a uniformed approach with all clients. Here is a breakdown of Ericksons approach to working with clients into a 3 step process. The middle step discusses the use of metaphors, Milton would use metaphors that the client could relate to (some hypnotherapist copy metaphors, using it them with a client with no frame of reference and wonder why the session didn’t have the desired outcome)
Step 1;
Induction; Erickson would use either direct or indirect suggestions to create trance. “can you sit there quietly and close your eyes?” or “sit their quietly and close your eyes” The use a pre-suppositions are used throughout Ericksons scripts, as the presumption is taken for granted “can you sit down there quietly and close your eyes now or in the next few minutes”
Erickson would psychological orientate clients into trance, asking “have you ever experienced trance before?” This questions directs the client to go inside themselves to check.
A key aspect of therapy for Erickson was building rapport by matching the language the client used, as well as their posture and facile expressions. Matching language allows the client to feel at ease, as the therapist comes across understanding their map of the world.
Disassociation and Deepening; To start the deepening of trance, Erickson was known for his use of unconscious and conscious disassociation “your conscious mind is A while your subconscious mind in B..” “your conscious mind listens to the words I have to say, while your subconscious mind is listening to the relevant parts..”
To deepen the trance Erickson would state what was happening at the psychology level to deepen trance “you have altered the rate of breathing, you have altered your pulse, your blood pressure and hart rate, close your eyes now and feel that state of relaxation, feel a deeper level of relaxation…
Step 2
Matching Metaphors; The use of matching metaphors adopted by Erickson help to create rapport while taking a client deeper into trance. While in trance a mixture of metaphors were used to create therapeutic change.
Metaphors were in direct way to create suggestion, learning and choice. Choice is the goal as Erickson believed that the subconscious would make the best choice for the client.
Erickson’s matching metaphors, especially the initial metaphor used, would have parallel themes relating to the clients problem. Often Milton would start a metaphor, then start second and third without ending the first metaphor.
Each metaphor had a unique purpose. The purpose could include to retrieve resources or past experiences (and associated state) What the client focuses on they feel, this state can then be associated to a new stimulus.
Each metaphor is then closed or story ended, depending on the client, depends on how the metaphor would close. In many sessions Erickson had a focus on linking resources for self esteem and self worth.
Step 3 To Beat Procrastination
Reorientation; The final stage is reorienting the client to the waking state. You could also add affirmations at this sage to re enforce the therapy. As a final stage a future pace could be added to check the clients change from their perceived problem
