3 Reasons Why You Need to Fail to Succeed
We all want to be successful; successful in achieving our weight loss goal, successful in a multi-million pound deal to successful in learning a new skill
Everyone is aware that to be successful that often you have to overcome a failure and here are 3 reasons why you need to fail before you succeed
Why You Need to Fail Before You Succeed #1
Without first failing you wont know how to handle a possible failure.
An initial reaction to a potential failure is to fight it head on. We see examples of this all the time. Governments will commission funding for a new building, this new build has an estimated cost of £3 million. Half way through the project it becomes clear that the building will fail without an additional £1 million being thrown in.
The government contrast the additional £1 million to the already spent original £3 million and conclude that it is worth investing the extra funds. Several months later, the project manager request a final £1 million investment (maybe some extreme weather or unforeseen problem has created the need for the additional expense) The government again contract “we have already spent £4 million, lets give the final required £1.5 million.”
The project now has had an additional £2.5 million spent on it. Using hindsight you now realise that rather then investing you should have pulled out at the first request for additional funds.
The experience of failing helps you create a new perspective, a new learnt lesson. In future projects when a similar situation arises you now have knowledge that can help you may make an informed decision. Now imagine the next project is a £10 million project, the failure in the first project can save you a larger amount of money.
Why You Need to Fail Before You Succeed #2
When you fail you will often learn or have an innovative idea from the new failed perspective
There are thousands of stories where someone with a goal failed only to create a new innovative idea, piece of machinery or medical breakthrough. The post-it not was original a failure. The inventor was attempting to create a really strong glue, but instead fell upon a glue that could be easily peeled, which made him a millionaire.
Failing makes you feel like a loser. But by thinking about what you have learnt, the new ideas and new creations you have formed, failing now becomes part of the learning process.
You can even take this one step further. Even when you get a task right, you can push yourself, test different methods and approaches, knowing that some will work and that some will fail, as you now know the failing can produce massive breakthroughs.
Why You Need to Fail Before You Succeed #3
When you are successful for the first time, after failing several times, you first won’t believed what has happened.
You will check and double check. You will look at it from different perspectives and test it, checking that you truly have been successful. This is key for any success – looking for the potholes. If a problem is found you can amend it before it goes live
If you have been lucky and have had several successes, you are likely to believe you will be successful all the time – a winning streak. This tunnel vision can bite you in the bum, as you put something out there that is full of errors. This long terms can kill your credibility and even cost you financially
Failing helps you to become a double checker
