Does Meditation Increase Confidence?
I just recently returned from a meditation retreat.
The meditation course was an induction to meditation, and while on the course one of the participants asked “does meditation increase your confidence?”
What is Confidence?
To Answer this question you first need to ask – what is confidence?
Confidence is the feeling or belief that you can have faith in yourself or faith in your ability to do something (this can include communicate with others)
Confidence is a state as well as a belief. You can feel confident in a situation, confidence can rise and fall (as confidence is a spectrum rather then an on and off emotion)
What is Meditation?
Meditation is the ability of transforming the mind.
Using meditation techniques (very similar to self-hypnosis and mindfulness) you can increase concentration, calmness and relaxation.
In short meditation can teach you to control your emotional response. You can learn to disassociate, change habitual responses and to choose a state of calmness
Can Meditation Increase Confidence?
As confidence and calmness are both states, you can use meditation to create the feeling of confidence.
You can start traditionally, using meditation to relax and feel more calm, from this you can then focus on the feeling of confidence and allow this feeling to spread throughout you. Once in this state of confidence, you can take this feeling and imagine being in the desired environment, feeling confident.
