3 Steps To Overcome a Bad Day At Work
Every so often we just have one of those days, the type of day when everything just goes wrong. It this situation all you want to do is leave work get home and forget all about it.
The problem here is people often fall into two negative traps; you will either use drinking, smoking or unhealthy eating to make yourself feel good. If you work in a stressful career and you continue to use this deflection model to get over a bad at work, you could create an addiction.
The second trap is reliving the bad day; you get home and think about everything you did wrong, you replay the negative self talk and perceive what others are saying about your mistakes. If this behavior persist you can create anxiety or even depression.

Step 1 Burn of the Negative Energy
If you work in a stressful job a great tip is to keep a gym kit in your bag.
When feeling stressed you build up a negative energy. To feel good about yourself you need to burn off this energy, to burn of the stress. After a bad day at work complete an exercise; running, gym, squash. By exercising after work two key elements come into play – your mind is focused on the exercise (not the stress of the day) and the exercise creates a positive feeling
Step 2 Change State
If you remain stressed when you get home from work this state will effect your behavior. To overcome a bad day at work you need to take control of your state and control your behavior
What you focus on you feel. When you arrive home, or before you leave work, ring a friend and plan to complete an activity; a walk, visit a theater, public speaking workshop (or any activity) An activity creates a new experience, this experience changes your state and your state changes your behavior
This sounds easy , but when stressed most people go home, sit down and then lose their motivation. By planning an activity you are more likely to take action, and its taking action that creates control
Step 3 Plan for Tomorrow
Stress and anxiety create the feeling of know control.
Take control by planning using a solution focus planning model (thinking of a solution rather then a problem) to decide what you will do differently tomorrow to get the desired result.
In your plan remember to use the skill of delegation, setting small goals and deleting task that aren’t important (people will often complete unimportant task as it makes them feel busy. But if you dont find the solution to your problem, your problem will still be there)

I really like your point on changing your state by doing a fun activity right after you leave work. That is a great way to help make your day a whole lot better right away. However, like you said, I would probably have a hard time actually getting out there. I feel like I’d need some help getting me motivated, either by a friend or a life coach.
