The right headed beast – the quick decision maker part of your mind (the logical left headed beast, makes decisions in a much slower and analytical way)

 

The right headed beast helps you make snap decisions, reacting without conscious thought – this can be life saving. The way your mind has evolved to act without thinking, helping you make positive habits which can save your life in certain situations, also has a negative side effect, it can make negative knee-jerk reactions.

Reason 1 – Humans are habitual creatures.

 

The mind when in a new situations ask “how should I react to this situation” searching for a frame of reference. This happens in milliseconds, before your mind sends an emotional signal to your body telling you how to react

 

Sometimes your internal google search engine can pull up negative results, without conscious thought, you make a bad decision.

 

To make better decisions, step back and ask “is there any new information that can inform my new decision?” This is the left headed logical beast taking control, using logic and analytical skills to help you make a better informed decision.

 

***if your automatic reaction positive – keep doing it. If the response doesn’t get you the desired result, use your logical brain to make a new choice

Reason 2 – the information we are presented with effects the choice

Your right headed beast makes a decision based on the stimulus, facts and sensory data it comes in contact with. Remember the right headed beast makes instant decisions.

 

If you were ask to value an item in an antiques fare, and most of the items around the antique item you are going to value range between £1-£10, this data will effect your answer, with many people valuing the antique at £5-£15

 

Now, imagine the same item is in a new antique fare surrounded by antiques valued between £30-£40, most people will now value this item at a higher price. This is because the data has influenced you.

 

 

***to stop falling foul to ‘anchors’ use that logical side of your mind, research, ask questions find out more about the influencing data which is manipulating you

Reason 3 – create more time

 

You are hardwired to make quick decisions (this is valuable evolutionary masterpiece) You can when required, take your time to analyse your natural decision making process.

 

The problem is, is that we live in a busy world. We often don’t have enough time for…anything. This leads to poor decision making skills.  Often you don’t know you have made a poor decision until later on in the day.

 

Having time to reflect, to think, to analyse allows you to ensure your decision was the right one.

 

*** after big decisions, but before you take action (remember many decisions are instantaneous)  slow down, think and reflect – is this really the result/action/outcome you want?
