How to Control Your Emotions Through Self Talk
eurekalert.com in a recent article this week, discussed how talking to yourself in the third person can help you control emotions “the simple act of silently talking to yourself in the third person during stressful times may help you control emotions without any additional mental effort than what you would use for first-person self-talk”
This is something we have discussed before on this blog; Change your stress by changing how you talk to yourself This article gives the evidence to these techniques via a study led by psychology researchers at Michigan State University

Article describes disassociation through using the third person. The individual words you use changes the perception your mind filters the information. When using “I” the brain creates an associate state – you will visualize the situation from your own eyes. Compared to when you use the “third person” perspective; saying “Chris” instead of “I” creates a disassociated perspective, your brain visualizes “Chris” (you see yourself in the situation compared to seeing it from your own eyes.
The article explains “Essentially, we think referring to yourself in the third person leads people to think about themselves more similar to how they think about others, and you can see evidence for this in the brain,” said Jason Moser, MSU associate professor of psychology. “That helps people gain a tiny bit of psychological distance from their experiences, which can often be useful for regulating emotions.”
This is part of the technique we use for phobia removals – creating a disassociated state when viewing the phobic stimulus.
When initially working with phobic clients, the client when stating their fear will often create a state of anxiety (just from explaining what their phobia is) This is because the visual stimulus recorded in the brains visual cortex, is fired off when the word (phobic stimulus) is stated – this is often in the form of a memory
By creating a disassociation, often created by changing perspective – seeing themselves in the situation looking at the stimulus, rather the seeing the stimulus from their own eye perspective changes the level of anxiety.
In the article they explain the results of a similar experiment; “participants viewed neutral and disturbing images and reacted to the images in both the first and third person while their brain activity was monitored by an electroencephalograph. When reacting to the disturbing photos (such as a man holding a gun to their heads), participants’ emotional brain activity decreased very quickly (within 1 second) when they referred to themselves in the third person”
