Can Virtual Reality Cure Phobias?

This week Rae Johnston from gizmodo.com.au explains how virtual reality maybe the key to curing phobics through a safe version of exposure therapy.

After receiving a government grant, “Totem Labs is a Sydney-based company using Virtual Reality and 360 video to treat phobias with exposure therapy” explains Rae

The Sydney Phobia Clinic using innovative technology is expanding across Australia, a country where millions of citizens struggle with phobias “It’s estimated that 6-12 per cent of people suffer from anxiety related to a specific phobia…”

How does virtual reality work as a cure for phobias?

Can Virtual Reality Cure Phobias?

Disassociation

As in many countries most phobics suffer from similar fears “The most popular fears treated at the clinic are are flying, heights, public speaking, claustrophobia, spiders, dogs, needles, birds, vomit and cockroaches. The clinic also covers less common fears – such as the fear of holes, balloons, fruit – even cooked fish.”

Peoples fears increase when they see the imagined fear (phobics will visualize their fear throughout the day) from the 1st person. By encouraging the phobic to see themselves looking at the stimulus (the third person viewpoint) they create an automatic disassociation, diminishing the fear response.

Therapist may struggle to get a client to imagine their fear when promoted. The founder of Totem Labs said “there was a gap in the treatment of phobias between trying to picture things in your imagination, and actually being in that scenario.”

Safe Place

To overcome a phobia, the phobic has to first be in a state of relaxation before visualizing the stimulus in their minds eye. A life long phobic can find creating a state of relaxation a tricky task, as the mere mention of the word (stimulus) fires of the flight or fight response.

Using a computer graphic allows the phobic to feel safe. The safe feeling is then associated to the fear/stimulus. When the phobic sees a virtual reality version of themselves with the stimulus it embeds a new pathway and association.

Double Disassociation

To create a further disassociation, the brain recongnise that the characters in the virtual reality aren’t human. This cartoon style version of you creates a double disassociation diminishing the fear even further.

The brain learns not to fear all versions of a stimulus and creates a belief change – i can feel calm when in virtual reality I can learn to feel calm in real life.
