These techniques to market your coaching business online have come from the Coaching Business in a Box. Online marketing is key for a successful life coaching business. Once set up correctly you can allow your marketing campaign to look after itself while you concentrate on coaching your clients.

 

Google Ads as a marketing strategy and end up with a large bill from Google and NO CLIENTs. But when used correctly this can increase referrals and profits. The reason many coaches fail using Google Ads is due to the fact that they have a generic campaign which results in unwanted clicks (these cost money)

 

But once you learn how to target your niche with Google Ads you will receive fewer clicks and a higher referral rate. IE Lower Google Ad cost and an increase in client bookings.

 Google Ads – Understand the Potential 

 

When you add in a search query to Google “Life Coach in Manchester” you are instantly shown the a list of potential websites – for this search query you will be shown a list of life coaching businesses.

 

Research has shown that the top 3 search results receive the most clicks.

 

As well as the organic search results, you will also see several “Google Ads” at the top of the page and to the right of the page. These are referred to as ‘Google Ads’ and they take about 5 minutes to set up.

 

Here is an example of a Google Ad Campaign I successfully ran under my Career Coaching Business for “CV Writing Service”

The way they work is, that you set up an ad, you add the search terms you want your ad to show on and as a customer clicks on your ad you get charged (the cost per click ranges depending on the popularity of the search term)

 

On average a click “Life Coaching in Manchester (location)” cost around £3-£4 but this will vary depending on your location. When you set your ad up, Google with you give an estimate of your cost per click.

 

To be successful you need to TARGET your Google Ads. You only want potential clients to see and click on your ad. This way your weekly cost for clicks is low, and your referral rate is high. Don’t fall into the trap, many new coaches fall into, and think, if I target everyone, a percentage of these will book a session. 

 

This will happen. But the cost of unwanted visitors (people not interested in your service) clicking your ad because your marketing is intriguing will increase your cost. WE have all done it, click a link and thought “this has nothing to do with my search query”

The Secret To Making Google Ads Pay

 

Competition for customers is high. The problem that many coaches have is how they target there potential customers. 

 

Many coaches set up Google Ads under a generic term “coaching.” This allows Google to show your add under any “coaching” related search term; football coaching, coaching books, coaching training course.

 

Initially you think “great – the more exposure I get the better!” But this is the mistake all new coaches make. For your coaching business to be successful you need to niche

 

International organisations (Nike, Pepsi, Amazon) use exposure marketing through a variety of channels from sport sponsorship to billboard to Google Ads,   to create a familiar brand. This familiarity creates desire but this is a costly process that rarely works for a coach

 

Coaches need to target their advertising to a particular customer and this is why Google Ads can be highly effective

 

Step 1 – Give the Customer What They Want

 

Step 1 in this process is Niching your coaching business

 

Many of you reading this article will have a coaching website that covers all aspects of coaching from business coaching to career coaching to confidence coaching.

 

As I discussed in the “Coaching Business in a Box” it is easy, as a new coach, to fall for this trick. You wrongly believe that the more “coaching options” I offer the more clients I can access.

 

The opposite is true, the more you niche the more clients you will receive. This is true for your Google Ads you need to niche your advert rather than offering a generic coaching service

 

Only people looking for coaches search for a life coaching business. These individuals are looking for a particular services; business coach, self esteem coach, goal coach, phobia coach.

 

On average customers will look at 3 coaching websites before making a decision to contact a particular coach. If potential clients click your Google Ad and don’t purchase a session, this will cost you money

 

How does the client make a choice?

 

Imagine a customer requires a phobia coach to overcome a spider phobia. The client finds 3 life coaching google ads and clicks each one

 

  • Coach 1 offers a generic coaching service, she offers every type of coaching session known to man from goal setting to financial coaching
  • Coach 2 specializes in phobias, and coaches clients to overcome all phobias from snakes to spiders
  • Coach 3 markets himself as a spider phobia coach, with his website only targeting clients with spider phobias

 

The client is more likely to hire the coach who luckily specialize in her issue – spider phobia. This makes sense, if you were a client who would you choose a generic coach or an expert in your issue?

 Step 2 Targeted Adverts 

 

The secret with Google Ads is to only appeal to the clients who will book a session with you.

 

Your advert should turn off anyone who wont purchase your coaching service and intrigue all those potential clients who fall into your niche

 

Targeted Ads increase your click rate. To ensure your advert is clicked you first need to add a title and this is where your niche comes in, if you’re a spider phobia removal expert add a catchy heading “Spider Phobia Removal 1 Session Only”

 

Add some discounts “50% of This Week” and start each word with a capital letter (Google won’t allow the whole advert to be in capitals) to make the advert for appealing 

 

Ensure your link takes the client to the sales page not your home page, as clients want to read how you can help them before purchasing the product or service and don’t want to spend time clicking through pages.

 

Step 3 – Get On Google Page One

 

Once you purchase Google Ad campaign, your ad will appear on page one or page two of the Google search page. If featured only on page two, you need to increase your minimum payment per key word, as Google page two rankings don’t cut the mustard. 

 

Your key word (the search term customers use) should be targeted to your niche. Stay well away from “coaching” and use specific key words “spider phobia removal”

 

The key here is that you rank at the top of Google page one, the place where your potential customers are searching for you. Only customers wanting a phobia removal session will click your ad, keeping your outgoing cost low, because of your targeted ad 

 

With a targeted landing page, highlighting how you specialise in this niche will create the belief that you are an expert, which will increase bookings.

Many coaches work with clients long term. Rather then desiring a fast therapy session to cure a simple phobia, many clients want a long term coach to solve several issues, to set new goals,  to create a success state and to increase productivity.

There is a key advantage for the coach who is working with a client long term, that is the insight into the clients personality traits, stress indicators and motivational pull. By understanding the clients personality on a deeper level allows the coach to frame questions to motivate a particular individual which increases the distance moved forward per coaching session.

Two clients requiring stress coaching in Manchester due to demands set upon them in  their career can be coached differently once the coach understands their client motivational and stress indicators. The first client was “towards” motivated; he would always focus on the outcome, the goal and what he could achieve. The second client was a “away from” motivated, she focused on solving problems, overcoming barriers and checking issues. To make the sessions distinct and to motivate the individual I change the language I use when wording a coaching question to meet there individual motivational preferences

For a “towards” motivated client I phrase a question “How would this help you achieve your goal?” for an “away from” motivated client the question is expressed “how would this help you solve the problem?” This tweaks in communication from knowing a long term client helps the clients focus on their personal motivational traits which allows them to internally make more sense of the session and how to move forward

Step 1 Target Your Coaching Clients 

 

A coach should target their ideal client by first profiling who this client is. The information taken from the profile can then be used to add to the right text, font, images, language, price range, etc to the coaches website and marketing materials. This targeted approach increase the desired client and reduces the number of inquiries from clients who don’t match the profile.

By advertising to a particular client make-up you are increasing referrals from the clients you can best help. These same clients will then leave positive reviews, will market you through word or mouth and will return for additional support when required. As a coach it is highly motivational to see the success from your coaching skills which encourages you to keep developing your skills.

Word of mouth is a key tool in the coaches marketing bag. People generally hang around with people who are like themselves. By marketing and successfully coaching a particular profile, this same person will spread the word to similar ideal clients

Step 2 Create a Niche 

 

To attract long term  and high end clients, a coach needs to niche within a niche. High-end clients rarely require an “all-in-one” generic coach, instead they prefer to pay a higher cost per session for an expert, an authority within their issue and specialist coach. When marketing a coaching package, as discussed in the coaching business in a box,  a coach needs to focus the package to a particular market and niche.

This approach will turn away potential clients who are looking for an expert in a different niche, but you will receive a higher percentage of starts from referrals for their advertised niche compared to that of a generic coach. Many clients will re-approach their coach for additional support/niches if they receive an original good service/positive outcome for their previous issue.

Step 3 Niching Your Website 

 

Potential clients visiting your website have come with a “problem” in mind. By niching your coaching practice and website, potential clients are more likely to book a session with you rather then a generic coach. If a client wants a coach to help them achieve a financial goal, they will pick a “goal” coach over a generic coach, but a potential client looking to achieve a financial goal will always book a session with a coach who specialise in “financial goal planning” then a “goal coach” The golden rule is – the more specific and targeted you coaching business is, the more clients you will coach.

All the additional benefits and any freebies you give away as part of your coaching package has to be targeted to the issue you specialise in. As the client reads the benefits on the coaches website they feel they are getting additional support (free videos, e-books, etc) related to their issue as well as the coaching sessions. A coach may give away free resources but if these resources aren’t relevant to the clients problem it wont effect the clients decisions on whether or not to book a coaching session with this coach.

 

 

 

Step 4 Start for FREE

 

When breaking into a new market, niche or looking to work with a new business you will find a lot of doors are closed in your face. Competition as a coach is highly competitive which means coaches need to be creative when marketing to a new area/company. You can network and ask for introductions, but a more effective way is to offer your services for free.

By delivering free workshops, presentations or coaching sessions the door is re-opened. Once opened you can create demand for your services, as demand increases, due to the business seeing great results, you gain the position to charge for your services.

I have often took this approach, often delivering free workshops and then charging participants if they require one to one coaching

 

 

 

Step 5 High End Extras 

 

As a coach, time is money. Most coaches offer one to one sessions, which means you can only coach (and receive an income) one client at a time. When marketing your coaching business you may use incentives to increase starts; free 1 hr consultation, unlimited e-mail support – but all this takes time away from the coach and time is money.

Instead offer a high-end extra. An example of this is creating a 12 x 1 hr coaching video series. This can be offered as a chargeable product on your website but this same expensive product can be given away for free to anyone who books the “Gold Coaching Package” With a pre-recorded video series it doesn’t matter how many people buy it, as it doesn’t take any physical time away from you and your coaching business

Targeted Ads increase your click rate. To ensure your advert is clicked you first need to add a title and this is where your niche comes in, if you’re a spider phobia removal expert add a catchy heading “Spider Phobia Removal 1 Session Only”

 

Add some discounts “50% of This Week” and start each word with a capital letter (Google won’t allow the whole advert to be in capitals) to make the advert for appealing 

 

Ensure your link takes the client to the sales page not your home page, as clients want to read how you can help them before purchasing the product or service and don’t want to spend time clicking through pages.

 

Step 3 – Get On Google Page One

 

Once you purchase Google Ad campaign, your ad will appear on page one or page two of the Google search page. If featured only on page two, you need to increase your minimum payment per key word, as Google page two rankings don’t cut the mustard. 

 

Your key word (the search term customers use) should be targeted to your niche. Stay well away from “coaching” and use specific key words “spider phobia removal”

 

The key here is that you rank at the top of Google page one, the place where your potential customers are searching for you. Only customers wanting a phobia removal session will click your ad, keeping your outgoing cost low, because of your targeted ad 

 

With a targeted landing page, highlighting how you specialise in this niche will create the belief that you are an expert, which will increase bookings.

Why Word of Mouth Is The Worst Marketing Strategy for a Life Coaching Business

 

 

 As a life coach starting up a new business, you will be keen to uncover the best marketing strategy. Many professional coaches will tell you that word of mouth is the best way to attract new clients. There is strength behind this strategy and here are the reasons why.

 

  • Social Proof – people will believe what others tell them, especially if this person is someone they know, respect, a friend or a colleague. If you’re looking for a coach and a friend tells you that they recommend a particular person, you are more likely to approach this coach in the first instance
  • Referrals to Starts – due to the recommendations, the percentage of referrals to clients booking a session is high. Word of mouth referrals cost zero which increases profits and reduces marketing cost
  • Pass It On Effect – one successful clients leads to another. Word of mouth spreads, with each client passing on your details to friends and family, your referrals can double month on month

On the face of it, word of mouth sounds like a great and low cost strategy to increase client referrals. But for many coaches this strategy fails time and time again. There are 3 reasons why the word of mouth marketing plan doesn’t work, especially for new coaches.

 

  • Secretive – Many clients attend therapy sessions for personal and private reasons. Often clients will not actively promote their therapist, even if the therapist is a pivotal part of their changes.  If even 8 out of every 10 clients do not share your contact details, your referral rate will dramatically reduce.  
  • Lack of Initial Referrals – For new coaches, the hard part about setting up a life coaching business is securing the initial referral(s). With low initial referrals and the ‘secretive’ reason for a lack of word of mouth referrals, the whole word of mouth marketing plan falls on it’s head. You can initially use the Google Ad strategy found in the coaching business in a box, where you can initially secure paying clients and use these referrals to start the word of mouth process.

  • Lack of Numbers – Even if your client actively promotes your coaching business, there is still a key weakness in this strategy, which is a lack of numbers. Lets say your client has  10 close friends and a couple of siblings, lets say 15 – 20 close people who they would happily discuss your coaching practice with. First how many of the 20 people would require or want a therapy session? Just because the client is working with you, this doesn’t mean their inner circle requires therapy. Secondly, if you work with 10% of this referral (around 2 clients) these referred clients might fall into the secrecy bracket which stops the word of mouth referral strategy before it starts.

 

If word of mouth alone was a successful way to market your business, coaches simply wouldn’t waste money on marketing. When word of mouth is successful – each client refers 2 new clients who in turn both refer two more clients, so on and so on,  your business can really take off…for free.

 

In reality this doesn’t happen and word of mouth alone as a marketing plan will fail. Instead word of mouth should be an additional extra to your marketing strategy, increasing referrals and profits. To market your business, as discussed in the coaching business in a box, you need to use SEO and PPC advertising.
