5 Steps To Take Control of Your Life

5 Steps To Take Control of Your Life

Peoples belief systems control their life. At the extreme, if you truly believe you will die if you leave your house, your belief will make you Agoraphobic

If you believe you will always fail, you will never try anything new, you will never set goals and you never live up to your potential

Peoples experiences and back stories create strong believes that control you; you left the house once and was attacked. You set a goal and failed at the first hurdle.

These experiences and the stories we create at the unconscious level from our experiences, create our believes and your beliefs create your focus and focus creates emotion and it is this emotion that creates Pain or Pleasure  motivation for when you think about an action, goal or objective.

If you see a goal as pleasurable you will go for it, a pain perspective creates inactivity

101 coaching techniques

Take Control of Your Life Step 1 You Can Change Your Beliefs

People have a belief “this is it” “I am who I am” and “I was born this way” When you hear people stating these beliefs, you will know that these people live in a limiting belief system – they let their limiting beliefs control them.

In actual fact humans cant stay the same – we constantly learn, change, improve and develop. Even with bad habits and limiting beliefs we learn and develop.

We learn to reply on our limiting beliefs and we become experts in our habits. Remember at one time your habit wasn’t a habit, is was simply something you did once. A habit is a response or action you complete on a regular basis, this action becomes a habit when you perform it without thinking.

To change your back story you first need to understand that you can change and develop. Recent research shows how new neurons are created when we respond differently to a stimulus – your brain physically changes when you break a pattern

Take Control of Your Life Step 2 Recognize Your Story

Recently I spent a weekend with my niece. She told me “when I grow up I will marry a prince, he will look after me and buy me nice things”

We all learn stories when we are young. Our hunter and gatherer ancestors used stories, as we do today, to teach our children the rules of life, good and bad and how to behavior.

When your story becomes embedded into your belief system you will act accordingly to this belief and story. This is a good strategy for success unless your story is limiting your life.

Your success story and beliefs that work well for you could include:

  • “if you work hard you will progress in your career”
  • “studying increase knowledge”
  • “if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail”

If your back story is one that limits you, you will need to change the perspective of the story

  • “men/women will always let you down”
  • “to be successful in life you have to be rich”
  • “I have failed in everything I have tried”

When you focus on the negative, the bad experiences and your past limiting experiences you will, at the emotional level, feel negative.

If you change your focus you change your emotional state. This doesn’t mean that your past experiences didn’t happen, but it means you can change the perspective of the past experience

With a new perspective comes a new state

  • “men/women will always let you down” becomes “if I date people with the same values as me I will be happier in my relationship”
  • “to be successful in life you have to be rich” becomes “success is measured by your happiness”
  • “I have failed in everything I have tried” becomes “I learn from each and every experience”

Read the first beliefs and ask how does this make you feel? Then, read the re-framed beliefs and notice the difference in state.

Once you change your beliefs and create a new set of rules to live by, you will feel that you are in control of your life and a feeling of control is a powerful state.

Take Control of Your Life Step 3 What Makes You Happy

There may be one, two or many areas of your life that you need to change and you may be focused on these areas of development. But there are also areas of your life that you like. Maybe you have financial success, you have found your sole mate, your career is perfect, you feel healthy or have a close family

I don’t know what is going well for you in your life, what is the thing you enjoy about your life, what are you are proud off. Make a note of it.

Ask yourself “why does this area of my life make me happy?”

When you think about this positive area of your life, does it fit in with your backstory and beliefs? Maybe your are happy in your job, you have “worked hard” and this has led to your “progressing in your career”

The positive beliefs we have and our values equal our own personal happiness. If you are ‘living’ these beliefs and values you will feel successful. You feel over the moon if you find your self in a situation that is above and beyond your expectations; a promotion you didn’t believe you would achieve

If you live to your positive beliefs and values you feel good.

Take Control of Your Life Step 4 What Makes You Un-Happy

So, what parts of your life makes you stressed, makes you unhappy or makes you feel sad. Again, make a note of this.

Ask yourself “why does this area of my life make me unhappy or stressed?”

Think about this area of your life – does it meet your beliefs and values? If your life is all about being healthy, you may not like your career, because the long hours you work, makes it hard to eat healthily.

Knowing what areas of your life you need to develop can be the key to motivating yourself to create change and many of you from completing the above exercise will feel motivated to make a change.

But one thing creates helplessness and that is the “feeling of NO control.”

Take Control of Your Life Step 4 Create Control

If you feel helpless in your life, you may blame someone or something “It because of my childhood” “I was never given that lucky break” or “I never had the right teachers” Blame gives you an excuse for no control; the reason was X, if it wasn’t for X I would have Y.

No one likes the feeling of no control so we blame X to fulfill that feeling of a lack of control

If you hate the feeling of no control – TAKE CONTROL. If you are over weight, exercise. If you hate your job, find a new job. If have no money, find a strategy to make you rich. By taking action you take back the control, you will feel empowered and your motivation for creating change will increase

To take control of your life;

  1. How do you want to live your life – what is your purpose
  2. Be-aware of the things you are doing that meet this purpose
  3. Give yourself control by changing your limiting  beliefs and/or taking action to change your life

Manchester Hypnotherapist Shares The Secret Steps For Fast Phobia Removal

Manchester Hypnotherapist Shares The Secret Steps For Fast Phobia Removal

Fear, anxiety and phobias can control your life. When left untouched your anxiety and fear can grow out of control, limiting the whole of your life

As an NLP Life Coach and Manchester based Hypnotherapist I have helped a wide range of people from a variety of backgrounds overcome fears and phobias.

Today I will share with the tools I use to create fast therapy to remove your phobia quickly

101 coaching techniques

Change the Focus of Your Fear

People have a range of phobias from public speaking to spiders.

A phobic focuses on the fear of their phobia activating the flight or fight response.

The phobia focus becomes a daily limitation. If you change the focus of the fear, you can use a new fear focus  to overcome your phobia.

What is more fearful then the phobia?

  • Passing the phobia on to your children
  • The phobia spreading to all areas of your life
  • Disappointing loved ones
  • Losing your job due to your phobia
  • Not living life to the full

When you focus on a fear greater then a phobia you will change your perspective, which diminishes the phobic responce

The Logic – Emotional Seesaw

We have a logical and emotional brain. The phobic reaction to a stimulus comes from the emotional part of our brain – emotional reactions out way the logical brain

When emotionally caught up in a situation, your logic response disappears. If you activate your logic brain your logic brain out ways the emotional brain

  1. Become aware of when a phobic response is starting
  2. Scale your anxiety on a scale of 1-10, 1 representing calmness and 10 representing high levels of anxiety and fear
  3. Ask yourself “what can I do to reduce the number on the scale?”
  4. Ask “how will I feel if i was X number?”
  5. Ask “Is there any logic to my initial response?”

coaching business in a box

Rapid State Change

The phobic reaction to the stimulus is an emotional learnt behavior.

When a phobic reaction begins you can emotionally break your state which creates a new pattern which becomes a learnt behavior.

Fear grows with uncertainly – you don’t know how to react logically apart from flight, fight or freeze. If you change the way you use your body, your stance and body language, you will change your emotional response as the two, your mind and body are connected and work together

  • Recognize the onset of a phobic reaction
  • Use exercise; running, gym, swimming to change state
  • or stretch, dance or pull funny faces (as children do)
  • or force a loud long laugh
  • Listen to funny music (louder the better)  and nod your head to the beat

When left untouched your anxiety and fear can grow out of control, limiting your options, your success and goals.

Use Logic to Lower Your Fear

Fear is an emotional response to a stimulus.

The emotional part of your brain takes over, activating your fight, flight or freeze response.

When emotionally caught up in a situation, your logic response disappears. If you activate your logic brain your emotional response (fear/anxiety) will decrease.

Using “scaling” will reduce your negative emotional response to a thought/stimulus

  • Recognize your anxiety
  • Give your anxiety a number on a scale of 1-10, 1 representing calmness and 10 representing high levels of anxiety
  • Ask “what can I do to lower myself down the scale?”
  • Ask “how will I feel if i was X number?”

Perception Changes Phobic Reactions

When thinking about a future activity that brings on anxiety, you will imagine this image in your minds eye, from the perspective of being at the event. you see it from your own eyes

Anxiety will reduce if you imagine yourself watching the you in the image.

  • Imagine a phobic future activity
  • Pause the film
  • Imagine putting the film on a screen in a cinema/theater – so you can see yourself on the screen while sitting in the theater (this will disassociate you)
  • Float out of your body and into the projection booth, so you can see yourself watching the you on the cinema screen
  • Become aware of difference between the anxiety levels of watching yourself compared to imagining being in the situation

3 Steps To Create a Phobia

3 Steps To Create a Phobia

A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of a stimulus. This stimulus can be an object, environment, situation, food, animal, or well…..anything.

Anxiety induced by fear is different to a phobia. Someone with social anxiety may still attend a party but a social phobic wont go anywhere near a social gatherings.A phobia is more limiting then anxiety.

A phobia is an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about the stimulus. Here is a very short list of phobias

  • Amathophobia- Fear of dust
  • Carnophobia- Fear of meat
  • Chronomentrophobia- Fear of clocks
  • Cleithrophobia – Fear of being trapped
  • Dystychiphobia- Fear of accidents
  • Electrophobia- Fear of electricity
  • Heliophobia- Fear of the sun
  • Koumpounophobia – Fear of buttons
  • Lilapsophobia- Fear of tornadoes and hurricanes
  • Myctophobia- Fear of darkness
  • Pteromerhanophobia- Fear of flying
  • Triskaidekaphobia- Fear of the number 13
  • Xanthophobia – Fear of the colour yellow

101 coaching techniques

Hot To Create a Phobia Step 1 Overload the Sensory Data

Phobias are created when the Amygdalathe part of our brain responsible for controlling our emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation and our fight, flight and freeze mode (which is activated when we are faced with danger.) is overloaded by sensory data

When we are faced with a danger our experiences are passed through the Amygdala. All the sensory data of the experiences; sounds, smells, sights , etc is interpreted by our brain, which asks – am I in danger?

Once the context of the sensory data is established, we either realise that we are safe; the original sensory data was distorted or we react to the threat by activating our flight, fight or freeze response.

Something that initially scares you can be forgotten, as we logically work out that the stimulus is no longer a threat. But when  the sensory data is overloaded it can become trapped in the Amygdala, rather then becoming a forgotten memory.

If the experience is trapped our brain cant make sense of it and we rerun the phobic movie, feeling only the associated emotions – fear and anxiety, rather then using logic to name and shame the experience.

How to Create a Phobia Step 2 Replay the Phobic Experience

We feel fear and detect threats on a daily basis. Once the threat has passed we, in most cases, forget about it – it becomes a forgotten memory

When  the sensory data is overloaded it is trapped in the Amygdala. Once trapped we often rethink about the phobic incident and replay this often like a movie in our minds eye.

The more we relay this negative experience the stronger the associated emotions (fear and anxiety) become, the stronger the associated emotions, the more we replay the negative experience, creating a negative cycle which becomes a phobia.

coaching business in a box

How to Create a Phobia Step 3 Creating a Phobic Frame of Reference

A phobic reaction takes all the control away from you.

Your negative response to the stimulus becomes your frame of reference. You think of stimulus and your frame of reference is a phobic response.

The worst part is that the phobic response can grow into different parts of your life.

A client of mine told me about how her phobia of people started and grew out of control. The client on a night took a short cut home. While walking throughout the back streets she was mugged and threatened.

The shock of this unexpected mugging create massive anxiety. She was initially able to go out but she became fearful of back streets and dark alleys. This soon grew into a fear of streets with no visible people on them.

The phobia grew worse over the next few weeks with the client didn’t even want to leave the safety of her house, encase she found herself in a similar situation.

Her mind wanting to keep her safe, would fire the phobia response to any situation she associated to the danger.  The original danger was a back street ally, this was associated to empty streets, which was then associated to streets, which was then associated to going outside.

Inside the Brain How Does a Phobia Cure Work?

Inside the Brain – How Does a Phobia Cure Work?

A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of a stimulus. This stimulus can be an object, environment, situation, food, animal, or well…..anything.

A phobia differs from anxiety. Someone anxious about a flight will still get onto the airplane, whereas a phobic wont go anywhere near the plane, even the thought of flying triggers of a phobic reaction.

A phobia is an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about the stimulus. There are many phobias, here area few:

  • Amathophobia- Fear of dust
  • Carnophobia- Fear of meat
  • Chronomentrophobia- Fear of clocks
  • Dystychiphobia- Fear of accidents
  • Electrophobia- Fear of electricity
  • Heliophobia- Fear of the sun

NLP Fast Phobia Cure

The NLP VK Disassociation Technique (known as the NLP Fast Phobia Cure) helps clients to be cured of a phobia in one session. (We will be practicing the NLP Fast Phobia Cure at This Month Manchester NLP Practice Group)

To understand a phobia you have to understand the Amygdala

The Amygdala is the part of our brain responsible for controlling our emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation. It is in this part of our brain where our fight, flight and freeze mode is activated when we are faced with danger.

When we are faced with a danger our experiences are passed through the Amygdala. First the Thalamus decides where to send incoming sensory data (the spider, dark passageway, the airplane), the Sensory Cortex interprets the data and  the Hippocampus establishes the context of the sensory data.

The Hippocampus stores and retrieves memories and the attached frame of reference, the Amygdala decodes emotional frame of reference, before the Hypothalamus activates the flight, fight or freeze response.

Something that initially scares you can be forgotten, as we logically work out that the stimulus is not a threat. But phobias are always present.  When in danger you can overload the sensory data which becomes trapped in the Amygdala, rather then becoming a forgotten memory.

If the experience is trapped our brain cant make sense of it and we rerun the phobic movie, only feeling the associated emotions – fear and anxiety.

How Does the Fast Phobia Cure Work?

By getting a phobic to see the pre-phobic situation in black and white is powerful, as the Amygdala  needs colour to create the phobic response.

Disassociation (watching a movie of the phobic event from a projection booth) takes away the associated emotional attachment.

When you re-add the colour to the movie, step into the end of the phobic movie and run it backwards a couple of times, adding extra submodalities such as circus movie, this reprogrammes the frame of reference and emotional response to the stimulus.

Adding humor throughout the whole process helps to increase the speed of deleting the phobia.

Spider Phobias Manchester Hypnotherapy

Spider Phobias Manchester Hypnotherapy

Spider phobias are one of the most common phobias in Manchester. Research into phobias has shown how phobia genes can be passed down through DNA, this unconscious learning makes arachnophobia an easy phobia to inherit.

A Phobia is an associated emotional state attached to a stimulus – in arachnophobia the stimulus is a spider or the thought of a spider. Often arachnophobia starts as anxiety but quickly turns from anxiety into a phobic response. For many people arachnophobia limits their lives with some phobic’s not being able to attend a party, enter a new room first or even leave the house…encase they see a spider.

How Do You Remove a Spider Phobia?

There are many ways to get rid of a spider phobia and today I will share two techniques that I use with my hypnotherapy clients in Manchester.

101 coaching techniques

Fast Phobia Technique

The first technique is the “Fast Phobia Removal” Technique taken from NLP. This exercise is very powerful as it removes the associated perspective of a perceived spider.

When a phonic thinks of spiders they will visualise a massive, hairy, creepy, scary spider that they can see as if they are in the room, trapped with the spider. This associated image creates strong and overwhelming feelings of anxiety and fear.

To break this associated emotional response the NLP techniques first gets you to imagine you are in a cinema. You are then asked to imagine floating out of your body and into the projection booth, so you can watch yourself in the cinema – this creates a disassociation.

Next an image of you after a phobic experience when you are safe and calm comes on the cinema screen. The film of the phobic experienced in was backwards in a fast speed. As you are in the projection booth you can watch yourself watching the film (playing in reverse) creating a double dissociation.

As your emotion response in different as you are doubly disassociated your mind creates a new way of responding to the stimulus.

Creating Relaxation

A second technique I use with spider phobias during hypnotherapy sessions in Manchester is to create a deep state of relaxation. To build this up clients are taught how to relax through breathing deeply and by visualising a relaxing place often a beach or the countryside.

By using all the sessions visualising the place, hearing the relaxing sounds, smelling the smells and tasting the taste all help to create a strong association of relaxation. Once this state is at its peak, I ask the client to imagine taking this state of relaxation and imagine walking over a bridge to a room in their house (where there possibly could be a spider)

Still feeling totally relax the client moves slowly into the room feeling calm and confident, I then start to build up the possibility of there being a spider, reminding the client to focus on their feeling of relaxation.

The closer the client gets to the stimulus the more relax they become, until they feel so relaxed that they can see the spider and still feel calm and confident, they can hold the spider feeling inquisitive, they can laugh, smile and enjoy the feeling of power as they look at thus small, fragile creature which is more scared of them.

By associating a new feeling of relaxation to the stimulus (you can only feel one emotion at a time) you create a new frame of reference (stimulus = emotion (calmness and relaxation)
