5 Ways to Overcome Driving Phobia

5 Ways to Overcome Driving Phobia

This months guest post comes from the talented writer Sarah Brooks a Houston based freelance writer and blogger.

The fear of driving is not altogether uncommon, and certainly nothing to be ashamed about. There could be a number of reasons for developing this particular phobia, such as being involved in an accident, or even just viewing a horrible wreck. It could also be related to another symptom such as agoraphobia.

However, understanding the reason for your fear isn’t necessarily essential to overcoming your anxiety. It may help, but most phobias are based on irrational beliefs, which may be hard to dispel. There are a number of ways to confront your agitation, and get behind the wheel and on your way again.

101 coaching techniques

1. Avoid negative, simple, black-and-white thinking, like “If I drive a car, I’ll get in an accident.” It is alright to understand there is an inherent risk with driving, but don’t let it consume you. This type of thinking will simply feed your angst. Don’t fill your head with negative thoughts about driving, and what might happen while you’re behind the wheel. Instead take a more positive approach. Consider all of the benefits of driving, such as independence, and the ability to get to far away destinations without a lot of hassle. Drive sensibly, and recognize your limits. Don’t push yourself too far, too fast.

2. Take it one step at a time. Don’t just get in the car and drive. First, just sit in the driver’s seat and start the engine, and just leave the engine running. Get a feel for what it’s like to be in the “captain’s chair” of such a powerful machine, and keep reminding yourself you are in control. Next, just move slowly back and forth in the driveway or a vacant parking lot. Don’t even worry about using the gas pedal; let the idling motor do the work. Get used to controlling the car while it’s in motion. Then try slowly going around a quiet, familiar neighborhood. Just take a few laps around a block where you feel comfortable and aren’t likely to run into much (if any) traffic. From there, choose a destination only a short distance from where you start. Then keep going further, gradually expanding your limits. Avoid busy motorways and especially freeways until you feel comfortable. Above all, don’t rush – take it at your own pace.

3. Practice relaxation techniques, both in and outside the car. Getting enough rest, eating well and practicing meditation are all good ways to help relieve stress in any form. When you are in the car, a little deep breathing before you get started can help. Practicing a mantra, such as “The car is just a tool, a friend, and I’m in control and a good driver” (or whatever works for you). Listen to music if it helps you relax, or make sure the radio is off if it adds to your tension.

4. Make use of positive thinking. Congratulate yourself on the things you are doing right – driving carefully, adhering to the speed limit (both min and max), being alert and aware of your surroundings. Plan out your journey and know the route beforehand. Convince yourself it’s not the end of the world to miss a turn, and doesn’t warrant sudden erratic lane changes. You can always turn around at a safe location, if needed. Accept that moving to the slow lane is fine. Driving fast isn’t a must, especially if you’ve planned well and given yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. Properly maintain your vehicle to ensure it’s safe. Check the lights, turn signals, mirrors, seat belts, and get regular tune-ups. Before beginning your journey, make sure you are comfortable in your seat and positioned to reach the steering wheel, pedals, and other features without issues.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, both for your driving and your phobia. If your fear of driving is overwhelming you, or especially if it is coupled with other causes for anxiety, seek advice from a medical professional. Trained counselors can help you rationalize your fears and put them in their proper perspective. If you have friends or family to help you with your driving, take advantage of that resource. You may also consider enrolling in driving school or defensive driving classes to make you more comfortable with your skills, which will naturally ease your concerns about being behind the wheel.

Kent Student With Chronic Cheese (Turophobia) Phobia

Kent Student With Chronic Cheese (Turophobia) Phobia

As with most phobias, they are to the non phobic, irrational. A 22 year Kent student has had a lifetime phobia of cheese – Turophobia. Becoming a turophobic at the age 4 could be one of the reasons why her phobic is so strong now, Melissa North can no longer walk past the deli counter without breaking out in cold sweats.

101 coaching techniques

Growing up, her schools friends finding she was turophobic, decided to test her claims of being a phobic by throwing large amounts of cream cheese in her face. “I went to the toilets but was in too much of a state to clean it off. I was panicking and crying and I could just feel this horrible sticky cheese all over my face.”

Melissa phobia is getting out of control, these days she can’t walk past a deli counter, she has to switch the channel on the TV remote when a cheese advert is shown and when her boyfriend chases her around the flat holding a block cheese“I just have to lock myself in the bathroom until he gets bored. He is supportive of me but it’s hard to explain how much I hate it.”

The article talks about using coping strategies to overcome the phobia. But you don’t have to. Hypnotherapy and NLP can delete the phobia, remove the fear and leave you anxious free.

Most phobics wrongly believe they have to put up with their phobia for the rest of their life. But that just isn’t true. Phobias can be gone within a couple of hours of hypnotherapy.

Poll Reveals The UKs Top Phobias Do Manchester Residents Have The Same Phobias?

Poll Reveals The UKs Top Phobias Do Manchester Residents Have The Same Phobias?

A recent survey on yougov.com reveals the UKs top 13 top phobias. As a hypnotherapist specialising in phobia removal I’m not surprised by the top 4 phobias, as most of my phobic clients come to me with one of these four fears.

101 coaching techniques

The top four phobias in the UK are 1. Heights 2. Public Speaking 3 Snakes. 4. Spiders. In Manchester (from my own experience) Spider and Public Speaking are two of the most common phobias.

The 2014 survey breakdowns the UK phobias into Sex and Age. Women are more afraid of heights then men, and women more afraid of small spaces, spiders, snakes, flying and darkness. According to this pole, women on average are more phobic then their male counterparts. But when it comes to needles men are more likely to run away.

Surprisingly, mainly because I have cured many clients of costume phobias, clowns phobic’s are low on the list of the UKs top phobias.

When it comes to spiders, one of the most common phobias in the UK, a third of men and about half of women possess this phobia, and what is surprising the gap varies depending on age. 18 to 24 year olds are twice as likely to be afraid of spiders then the 60+ category

This is a great piece of research. To read the full article click here: UK Phobia Survey Results

Manchester Life Coaches Teaches You To Control Your Negative Self Talk

Manchester Life Coaches Teaches You To Control Your Negative Self Talk

Negative self talk, that nagging voice in your head can stop you being successful. That devil whispering in your ear can limit your life. Imagine, being on a night out. In the bar, you spot someone who you really fancy, you know deep down that this is destiny, this is the person you should spend the rest of your life with.

You stand up planning to ask this person out on your first date, before taking the first step you hear your inner demon whispering “she wont like YOU!…” You stop in your tracks. “you will just embarrass yourself, don’t bother, you’re better off without her, anyway how would you feel if she said NO..?”

Negative self talk is powerful. That little voice in your head can create procrastination, can limit your life and can stop you achieving your goals.

This simple technique will empower you to delete the negative self talk, giving you the control back.  To help with have videoed the technique and recorded the step by step instructions below.

101 coaching techniques

Deleting Negative Self Talk

Below is a breakdown of the technique you have just viewed on the video.

25 free coaching tools

  1. Step One – locate the voice. Where is the negative voice? On your left or right hand side? At the front or back of your head?
  2. Step Two – Shape Shift. Turn this voice into a shape. What shape is your negative self talk? A square, Triangle, Circle or any other shape? Give the shape a colour – what colour is your shape?
  3. Step Three – Motion• Start to move the shape downwards. Slowly, at first. From your head, down towards your shoulder. Move the shape from your shoulder down your arm towards your elbow. From your elbow to your hand, from your hand to your leg, leg to your knee. From your knee to your foot.
  4. Step Four – Give It The Boot. Allow the shape to fall from your foot to the floor – at this stage you will get an urge do get rid of this shape. What do you want to do to the shape? Kick it away? Stamp on it? Put it under your chair? Vanish it into space?
  5. Step Five – Follow The Urge. Complete your urge; crush it, kick, stamp on it – what ever you feel compelled to do. Have all the negative emotions vanished? Most said they vanished a long time ago.

Try this exercise several times and notice how it gets easier and quicker it is to remove the power of the negative self talk.

Hypnotherapy CD success story ends love affair with chocolate

Hypnotherapy CD success story ends love affair with chocolate

Julie Cook had been struggling with her need to eat chocolate for many years, using chocolate to cope with the day-to-day stresses of life and as comfort food when she was feeling down. She found it near impossible to control her cravings and realising that her weight and health were suffering. She knew she had to do something and turned to hypnotherapy for help.

On contacting counsellor and hypnotherapy expert Sharon Shinwell, Julie said “I have gained weight and also my self-confidence has taken a nose dive. I also have found that it has made me do sneaky things like pretend when buying lots of chocolate that it is a treat for my children but knowing full well that I would eat it all myself when on my own and they weren’t around.”

Julie feels hypnotherapy has significantly changed her life, “I am a strong believer in trying to help yourself in making positive changes in your life. I feel I have succeeded in breaking a bad habit/addiction and am pleased with myself for being able to do something that I thought was impossible!”

Sharon Shinwell is a published author on the subject of Hypnotherapy and the producer of the ‘Here To Listen’ range of self-hypnosis Audio CDs and downloads which can be found on: www.selfhypnosisuk.com

Sharon explains “In an ideal world, face to face Hypnotherapy is the preferred way to use this form of therapy, but in today’s fast moving busy life, few of us has the luxury of time or money to go for regular Hypnotherapy sessions. With the advent of new technology, understanding of hypnotic scripts and techniques, and the public’s motivation for self-help and alternative medicines, Self-Hypnosis has become a very good alternative.

“Self-Hypnosis is a powerful self-help tool for implementing change within your life. It is simple, effective, non-invasive, produces long-term changes, and can be used by almost everyone. By using a pre-recorded audio CD or download, you will have, at the touch of button, a full Hypnotherapy session that can be used whenever you need to, as often as you need to.”

Self-Hypnosis can be used to relieve many physical, psychological, and emotional problems. It is often used to change behaviours, break unwanted habits, for overcoming fears and phobias, conquering pain, stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, improving health, or for personal development. Often soothing music accompanies the therapy at strategic points, helping the listener to relax, and absorb the information whilst the therapist guides the listener with gentle suggestions, positive language, and life changing imagery.
