Is Trypophobia a Real Phobia?

This week LiveScience.com talk about an Unusual Phobia: Researchers Suggest New Reason for Fear of Bubbles

What is Trypophobia? Trypophobia is the fear of a cluster of wholes or bubbles. Tracey Staedter the article author describes the phobic reaction, comparing the phobic response from that of a snake phobic to  “people have similarly uncontrollable reactions to seeing clusters of bubbles”

Trypophobia is a recently discovered phobia which could actually date back to when we where hunters and gathers. Many phobias stem from the amygdala wanting to keep us safe; we fear snakes and spiders because they killed our ancestors

Tracey explains “…Trypophobia which means “fear of holes” in Greek), was first documented in 2013.” and goes on to explain “…some scientists have suggested that the extreme reaction to round shapes occurs because they resemble spots or circles found on poisonous animals, including snakes and the blue-ringed octopus.”

Could Trypophobia come from evolution saving us from parasites?

“Pathogens and parasites have been one of the main threats to humans and animals during their evolutionary history,” said Tom Kupfer, a postgraduate researcher in psychology at the University of Kent in England. Avoiding them reduces the chance of getting sick, he told Live Science.”

Many phobias are learnt through observational learning or through a emotional experience. But research is indicating that some phobias, especially those to avoid dangerous things (mainly poisonous animals) can be passed through our DNA

Tracey goes on to talk about an experimenter where groups of people were monitored when shown different images  of clusters of wholes to represent diseases. Most people felt disgust, the natural reaction reaction to poisonous or gone-off food stuff  – things that will cause us harm

But people suffering from trypophobia had a different reaction. “The researchers reported that when the people with trypophobia looked at images with clusters of holes or bubbles, they said things like, “The primary feeling is one of inexplicable and extreme revulsion..”

Fear of Cotton Balls Phobia Sidonglobophobia

Fear of Cotton Balls Phobia – Sidonglobophobia

This week in NYMAG.com talks about her fear of cotton balls (sidonglobophobia) and how exposure therapy maybe the answer to overcoming this fear

The article stats that over “19 million Americans” have a phobia. In my experience as a hypnotherapist is that most people suffer from anxieties rather then have an actual phobia – the person becomes highly anxious when confronted with their fear (often this is a spider/insect, animal, heights, being the center of attention) but can stay in that situation even though they feel uncomfortable

A phobic person, as the anxious person does, has an anxious reaction to a stimulus, but the reaction is so heightened that the fear makes them ‘flight’ or ‘freeze’ when confronted with the stimulus.

Crystal explains in the opening paragraph of her article how she become so fearful of opening a jar of pills “envisioned a fluffy white mound cushioned above 50 pills. I could hear the horrific sound the cottony orb made while being freed from the bottle” that her husband had to come to her rescue. This is a common negative side effect of a phobic.  The phobic will imagine that the stimulus they are phobic off in environments that they will never be in, often leading to new phobias through association. In this example you can imagine Crystal becoming fearful of plastic pill bottles, if she continues to associate a potential cotton ball in a pill bottle.

The Power of a Phobia

A phobic stimulus is powerful, more powerful then a anxiety reaction, because the phobic will engage all senses into the imagination (and the brain doesn’t distinguish between what is real and what is imagined, as imagined and actual seen stimulus light up the same areas in the brain)

Crystal explains how she reinforces her phobia “Just thinking about what might be inside was causing a sick feeling in my stomach. Then, one by one, the intrusive memories spun in my head. I envisioned a fluffy white mound cushioned above 50 pills. I could hear the horrific sound the cottony orb made while being freed from the bottle. I remembered the unnerving sensation of touching one. Goose bumps erupted on my arms, and I cringed.”

This thought process uses many senses; “sick feeling” “envisioned a fluffy white mound” “i could hear the horrific sound” “I remembered the unnerving sensation” It this over use of the senses that reinforce the phobic reaction and which can create a new phobic reaction, through association to a non-threatening stimulus – which in this example could be a bottle of pills.

But, phobias can be deleted. New associations can be embedded and new reactions, calmness, can be created

Changing Association

There is now evidence that you can be predisposed to be more likely to gain a phobic reaction is your parents have a similar phobia. It is recorded in your DNA and to release it all you need is observational learning to act as a powerful trigger.

Crystal in the article explains “My older sister, who also has sidonglobophobia, often spoke of her aversion when I was a child. I knew about her fear before I reached into the bag that day; in all likelihood…”

Crystal explains the advice she recieved from psychologist Kevin Chapman, an expert in anxiety disorders. “Chapman said. A form of exposure therapy, he explained, CBT involves “confronting … the feared stimulus in a ‘graduated’ fashion while simultaneously countering thoughts that overestimate the likelihood of danger or catastrophe.”

Exposure therapy is well documented, and as with all therapist works better with some patients then others. The idea behind exposure therapy  is to exposure of the patient to the stimulus without any danger, in order to overcome their anxiety.

What you do here is create a disassociated perspective. Unlike Crystal who imagine the cotton balls as real, using all her senses, the imagined exposure (some therapist use the real stimulus)   is seen without the intensive emotional response.

coaching business in a box

In the article Crsytal talks about the work of Paul Siegel, an associate professor of psychology at Purchase College, who has researched and treated phobias in his lab for the past 12 years. “Siegel is experimenting with a form of unconscious therapy called “very brief exposure” where people with phobias are repeatedly exposed to pictures of what they’re afraid of, but the pictures are virtually subliminal. Each image is presented for about three one-hundredths of a second, which is faster than most people who have phobias can recognize. They’ve only tested this treatment on the fear of spiders and social phobias, but the results have been promising.”

The subconscious mind records everything, even when the conscious mind isn’t aware of this. By showing a phobic a picture of a stimulus for such a short time that the conscious mind is unaware of the image, the subconscious starts to create a new path way and association between the state of relaxation and the stimulus.

Other therapy to overcome phobias; havening, CBT, Hypnotherapy, NLP work with the same principle even though the actual techniques vary. The patient is in a state of relaxation when they are asked to imagine the stimulus, creating a new association.

Crystal is still working on her phobic reaction and we wish her the best of luck.

Does My Child Has a Phobia?

Does My Child Have a Phobia?

This week Liji Thomas from news-medical talks about phobias in children.

“A phobia is a condition in which an individual suffers from intense fear of an object or situation that lasts for a prolonged period of time and has no rational cause” says Liji. Does your child have a phobia? The difference between a phobia and anxiety is that a child with a phobia of a particular stimulus wont be able to go near the thing they fear, as a child with anxiety, can approach there fear but will feel high levels of anxiety.

There anxiety can evolve into a phobia. So, how do children become phobic?

e-mail chrisdelaney7@gmail.com

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00053]

Children and Phobias

Liji said “Research has found that the causes of phobia lie in different elements such as biological, family, and environmental factors” she goes on to talk about three ways that phobias can become attached to children; biological causes, family factors and through the child’s environment.

We know from various research sources that children, like animals, can be predisposed to have a more likely phobic response to a stimulus, if the parent(s) has a particular phobic reaction.

This means if a parent has a phobia of spiders, the child is more likely to inherit this phobic reaction at a biological level – the phobia is recorded in the genes the parents pass onto the child. For this phobia to come alive, the child will have to see a phobic reaction to the stimulus through observational learning.

Children learn at a young age, through observational learning, how to react to the world around them. Two children can see their parents reacting anxiously to, in our example, a spider. The child with phobic DNA is more likely to become phobic themselves compared to a child who didn’t inherit the phobic gene

In the article Liji explains how environmental factors can a big impact on an anxious child “Environmental factors may trigger the development of phobias in children, such as a traumatic event. For children, it might be a common situation like going to school after a long vacation that results in heightened anxiety”

Age and Phobias

The article explains how age can effect phobias and anxieties in children. “Some young children have the habit of imagining a nonliving object to be a living thing. This imaginary being becomes the basis for fears.”

We have evolve to survive in an ever changing world. The way a child develops and responses to the world around them, depending on their age, is designed through evolution as a survival technique. But the way we have evolved to survive has a negative side effect it can also make children fearful of a none threatening stimulus.

“Children of this age (2-4 yrs old) fear loud noises, sounds made by animals, toilets and bathrooms, ghosts, disabled people, death, and sometimes being alone.” Liji goes on to say “These children (8yr olds) might complain of simple and common fears such as the fear of social rejection, shifting to a new place to live, having to go to school or being late. They may also constantly worry about personal danger.”

coaching business in a box

It is this mixture of evolution of the mind, biology, observational learning and life experiences that can create phobias and anxious reactions to a wide range of stimulus’s.  This isn’t something to be feared as children can simply grow out of a phobia, learn strategies to increase confidence and  through plasticity change the neuro-connections in the mind.

As Liji explains “Parents have the tremendous responsibility of identifying excessive or constant feelings of anxiety in their children at the early stages and to address it themselves, or to seek professional help if the child does not respond properly.”

3 Reasons Why You Make Bad Decisions Without Knowing

3 Reasons Why You Make Bad Decisions Without Knowing

The right headed beast – the quick decision maker part of your mind (the logical left headed beast, makes decisions in a much slower and analytical way)

The right headed beast helps you make snap decisions, reacting without conscious thought – this can be life saving. The way your mind has evolved to act without thinking, helping you make positive habits which can save your life in certain situations, also has a negative side effect, it can make negative knee-jerk reactions.

Your mind, programmed through learnt experiences, can influence how you make decisions

Book a Video Hypnotherapy or Coaching Session Today. All you need is a webcam

e-mail chrisdelaney7@gmail.com

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00053]

Reason 1 – Humans are habitual creatures.

The mind when in a new situations ask “how should I react to this situation” searching for a frame of reference. This happens in milliseconds, before your mind sends an emotional signal to your body telling you how to react

Sometimes your internal google search engine can pull up negative results, without conscious thought, you make a bad decision.

To make better decisions, step back and ask “is there any new information that can inform my new decision?” This is the left headed logical beast taking control, using logic and analytical skills to help you make a better informed decision.

***if your automatic reaction positive – keep doing it. If the response doesn’t get you the desired result, use your logical brain to make a new choice

25 free coaching tools

Reason 2 – the information we are presented with effects the choice

Your right headed beast makes a decision based on the stimulus, facts and sensory data it comes in contact with. Remember the right headed beast makes instant decisions.

If you were ask to value an item in an antiques fare, and most of the items around the antique item you are going to value range between £1-£10, this data will effect your answer, with many people valuing the antique at £5-£15

Now, imagine the same item is in a new antique fare surrounded by antiques valued between £30-£40, most people will now value this item at a higher price. This is because the data has influenced you.

***to stop falling foul to ‘anchors’ use that logical side of your mind, research, ask questions find out more about the influencing data which is manipulating you

coaching business in a box

Reason 3 – create more time

You are hardwired to make quick decisions (this is valuable evolutionary masterpiece) You can when required, take your time to analyse your natural decision making process.

The problem is, is that we live in a busy world. We often don’t have enough time for…anything. This leads to poor decision making skills.  Often you don’t know you have made a poor decision until later on in the day.

Having time to reflect, to think, to analyse allows you to ensure your decision was the right one.

*** after big decisions, but before you take action (remember many decisions are instantaneous)  slow down, think and reflect – is this really the result/action/outcome you want?

3 Ways to Protect Yourself From Procrastination

3 Ways to Protect Yourself From Procrastination

Procrastination can feel like a physical barrier

Part of you wants to action action, but another part, a stronger part of you wants to sit and do nothing.

Even when the action would achieve a positive outcome IE going to a job interview would get you a well paid job, you still procrastinate. This is because procrastination isn’t a logical response, its an emotional pull

Here is how you can change how you feel about procrastination

e-mail chrisdelaney7@gmail.com

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00053]

Step 1 To Beat Procrastination

The perceived action, when you are procrastinating, feels like a big task

Even going to the gym. You don’t think “lets go to the gym” instead your mind tricks you through a procrastinating perspective “i have to get changed, then find my gym shoes, then get some money to pay the cashier, then i will have to choose which workout to undertake, then I will…..”

When procrastinating you make one small easy task seem big and overwhelming.

When you find yourself breaking one task down into a million steps, stop, take a deep breath and state the one task “I will go to the gym in the next 5 minute” then take action

25 free coaching tools

Step 2 To Beat Procrastination

Procrastinators often visualize themselves failing, in pain or  looking stupid

Its these negative thoughts that create no action. To take action, use an old mind-trick. Imagine the thought as a picture, make the picture black and white and put a border around it.

Slowly, at first, move the framed black and white picture away from your minds eye, future and future away until its a dot on the horizon. Once its a dot on the horizon, notice how it no longer bothers you.

Now imagine yourself doing the task/action and enjoying it – this will create motivation

coaching business in a box

Step 3 To Beat Procrastination

Reward Yourself.

Once complete (or when you achieve a milestone) you need to reward yourself. This creates double pleasure – the pleasure from completing the task and the pleasure from your reward which creates more motivation

Also tell other people how successful you have been, this again increases motivation but also installs  commitment to do the task again, as we know that our friends will ask about it next time they see you

How To Create Personal Confidence

Confidence isn’t an on or off switch

People book life coaches, hypnotherapist and confidence gurus to make massive rapid change to their state of confidence

They are looking for a change click, the therapist click their fingers and everything changes – this doesn’t happen

To create personal confidence you don’t need to make a massive change, you need to create little tweaks

e-mail chrisdelaney7@gmail.com

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00053]

Increase Personal Confidence #1

In a reflective mindset the individual wanting to make a change, realises that something isn’t right with their life.

It’s at this stage, they book a coaching session to set a massive goal “I want to be rich” “I want to be confident in everything I do” “I want to lose 20st”

The life coach helps them set a long term plan, only to watch it fail after several sessions – this is why new years eve resolutions don’t work.

The problem is, a big goal, even for a motivated individual, takes a long time to achieve it. As time passes by, as mistakes are made, as the achievement of the goal still feels way off, you give up

Instead of setting long large goals, make tweaks to your life; easily to implement changes.

  • Instead of “I want to be rich” put 10% of your wage into shares (compound interest creates big bucks)
  • Instead  of “I want to be confident in everything I do” attend new social groups (experiences increase confidence)
  • Instead of “I want to lose 20st” stop buying crisp and chocolates (reduce snaking, reduce weight)

Increase Personal Confidence #2

Who are you?

Your identity, the way you see yourself, changes your level of confidence.

Think about what you want in your life- not money, a big house or the amount of holidays you want to go on each year.

Instead think about you. Do you want to be a good listener, a reader of books, are you passionate about technology, science or self development? What makes you happy, what is your positive temperament?

As you understand what makes you, you, the best you, you will do these things more often, increasing your natural levels of confidence

coaching business in a box

Increase Personal Confidence #3

State control

By controlling your state, you control your levels of personal confidence

As you can only feel one state at a time, you can decide which state to focus on. By imagining a state (confidence) you start to feel that state (deleting other states)

See yourself being confident; imagine what is going one, hear what is happening and feel the feeling of confidence. As you feel confident, the feeling of confidence inside of you will increase
