Spider Phobia Treatment Manchester

One in ten people in the US have a phobia according to the American Psychiatric Association and 40% of phobias are related to bugs and creepy crawlies. Similar research highlights the same percentage of Manchester residents having a fear or phobia which is limiting their life style.

Manchester has a large portion of arachnophobias and many phobics want to know how their phobia occurred and what can they do to get rid of it.

This article will answer both of these questions – why Manchester residents have a spider phobia and what are the various ways Manchester phobics can delete their agoraphobia.

What the Psychologist Say

Psychologists believe “conditioning” could be one of the key reasons why acrophobia is big in Manchester.

In 1991, Graham Davey at City University London completed a study to understand more about phobic conditioning. As part of the study Graham and his team interviewed 118 undergraduate students.

 75% of the people interviewed were either mildly or severely afraid of spiders. As other research has concluded a higher percentage of acrophobics are female.

Through curing many people of spider phobias I have found that the phobia has been passed on by their parents (or family members) Grahams study came to the same conclusion

“Those people fearful of spiders reported having a family member with similar fears, but the study was unable to separate genetic factors from environmental ones. What is surprising is that Davey found that archanophobia wasn’t the result of specific “spider trauma”, which means there was no support for the conditioning view.”

None phobics wrongly believe that a spider phobia is a fear of being bitten. In reality most people suffering from acrophobia become fearful of the size of the spider (they often perceive the spider as being bigger than it actually is) and a fear of how the spider moves across the floor.

Some phobic’s do have a spider phobia due to a childhood spider related phobia which backs up the conditioning argument. “in contrast to Davey’s work, Muris finds that the kids that were most fearful of spiders could relate that fear to specific events. Perhaps conditioning is the pathway to arachnophobia”

 

Recently I wrote an article on phobias being passed down in your DNA.

Hettema completed research into spider phobias with identical twins. He recorded the responses of twins to “fear-relevant” images. Statistical analysis of the results revealed that arachnophobia is inheritable – you yourself don’t have to have a spider related traumatic experience to become fearful of spiders as the fear response can be passed down in your DNA.

Spider Phobias Can Be Helped.

 

Acrophobia can be cured. There are several was to cure your phobia and different professionals have varying opinions on which technique works best. I personally use a mixture of NLP and Hypnosis the result of this combined therapy has allowed me time and time again to cure phonics within just one session, for lasting change.

NLP Hypnosis changes the emotion attached to the thought of  a spider. Instead of feeling anxiousness, you will feel calm and relaxed.

Is There Humour in Your Hypnotherapy Training?

 

One of the cornerstones of any good hypnotherapy training course is teaching the budding hypnotherapists that it is OK to have fun, when they are in hypnotherapy training and when they start practicing full-time as a hypnotherapist… Yes indeed, even in hypnotherapy sessions with clients.

Soap Operas seem to promote “serious issues”, our media is heavily punctuated with seriousness… Being serious seems to be proliferating our existence… Then grows into fear… and what with all this recession scaremongering…. Sheeez!!

In my opinion, within any hypnotherapy diploma course, it is important to laugh a great deal. Don’t we all prefer our learning experiences to be fun? Why don’t we insist upon it? Why is it so important?

Firstly, it creates a great learning environment, we learn more when we are happy and laughing… And lots of what we learn when we laugh bypasses the conscious faculty.

Hypnotherapists might want to consider watching comedy every week. Therapists that spend lots of each day working with people diagnosed as being depressed, ill, fed-up, limited in some way etc, etc. Can find laughter is a crucial tonic to keep them in a merry place. So when you are studying away or engaged upon your hypnotherapy training let me ask you a very important question.

How much do you really laugh?

Not that polite titter you do in response to certain things… I am talking about a full-hearted, belly bursting, proper laugh.

Some people find laughter a serious business! I can remember watching stage hypnotist and hypnosis trainer Paul McKenna running a hypnosis training seminar and anchoring laughter and giggles into someone on stage and he was pretending to be a ‘Gestapo’ like character and kept saying to the guy “You vill not laff! Zis iz seee-ree-uss!” I know, you had to be there, but it took apart the notion of laughter being a serious business, the guy on stage was in fits of giggles and it had me rolling about the place.

Getting fun and laughter out of some folk is like blood out of a stone…. Apparently, the average adult laughs 15 times a day; the average child, more than 400 times. Fair enough, kids are learning their way through feelings and emotions and could be giggling wildly one moment and screaming in anger the next, however, you get my point, don’t you?

The reason I am writing about this today, I think it is important for anyone that is hypnotherapy training, to know that it is well documented that developing and maintaining a sense of humour helps prevent and lift clinical depression because laughing produces ‘feel good chemicals’ and even subdues physical pain, humour helps us reframe events and ‘get outside them’ rather than feeling bogged down by them. A well developed sense of humour attracts other people to us socially and wide social networks are also a preventative and palliative as far as depression is concerned.

Heck, if you need any more convincing of this notion, then watch Robin Williams starring in the film Patch Adams which articulates the point very well indeed… An unconventional doctor who actually encouraged his patients to laugh and be mischievous in the face of more conventional serious healthcare of the time.

We all need to cultivate humour not just to lead happier lives but to encourage flexibility of thought.

Of course people with a sense of humour can develop depressions – some of my favourite comedians apparently suffered from depression – Frankie Howerd, Kenneth Williams (and Benny Hill – not really favourite of mine) – Though I did watch more than just carry on films as a child developing a sense of humour, hahahaha. You can see it though, can’t you? That is, one of the first symptoms of depression setting in can often be losing ones sense of humour – helping that person find it again could well be just the remedy!

Humour can provide us with seriously important and valid perspectives, goodness, my Mum used to always say “never a truer word is spoken in jest…” I used to frown at her saying that… Until I actually listened to the jokes my friends used to make about each other in the pub at weekends when I was younger and I started to realise!

Some say that people who joke in the face of diversity may be suffering ‘denial’ – usually it is the stuffy, conventional mindset that thinks such a thing, pulling us into some sort of insistence to conform to being properly miserable…

I’d like to think that instead of denial, they simply possess a developed capacity for objectivity. Never let us forget that it was Oscar Wilde who on his death bed said ‘Either this wallpaper goes or I do!’ Hahaha….

Have you really laughed today; even inwardly? Have you found the humour in what is going on?

When I was at school, I often found myself sat in the front of the headmaster being told off for being naughty… School did not stimulate me, I needed more than just verbatim regurgitation of information as my school curriculum mainly comprised of… Yet whenever I was there perplexing the headmaster (I think it irritated him that I got straight A’s) and he was shouting away, I’d find something ridiculous, I’d find something funny and I’d start giggling… “Eason, stop this insolence!” came the roar… You know what happens when you bottle up giggles, they want to burst out of your skin, they increase and amplify and everything becomes hilarious… Man, that is a glorious sensation.

Even today, the same happens if I have to sit quietly being serious with my solicitor, bank manager or accountant. They must think I am strange for giggling so much…

When we take things seriously, when we make life such a serious business, I think it can become far less flexible… It becomes staid and stagnant and joy finds it hard to exist in such a place… The same is true within hypnotherapy training and actually being a hypnotherapist – or therapist of any kind.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes people make you feel defensive, I used to allow myself to feel defensive, until I started joking and laughing things off… It genuinely is the cornerstone of my therapeutic technique these days and central to my hypnotherapy training.

Humour has always been banned under dictatorships; comedians are seen as a threat. Why? Because humour can illuminate truths, break through the constraints of narrow thinking and puncture self importance. Humour shows we are not afraid. Tyrants hate to be laughed at and they certainly don’t laugh at themselves. But the really surprising truth is that we all live under types of dictatorships.

Human beings often create, then subsequently live within the constraints of their own personal psychological dictatorships.

These personal restrictive ‘jails’ are built on a solid foundation of rigid rules and assumptions of right and wrong, with walls of ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts’ and ‘mustn’ts’, strong bars of perfectionism, unbreakable locks of defeatism, and guards of arrogance on constant duty to ‘be right’. And that arrogance can extend to ‘being right’ that one is totally inferior to other people. Or that life is bad.

The right humour applied at the right time by the right person can work as an escape tunnel…. Burrowing out and away from stifling narrow seriousness and restricted ‘one track’ perception.

Surely these days, we are all increasingly aware of the mental and physical health benefits of regular laughter. Many studies illustrate that genuine laughter reduces stress hormones, relieves pain, relaxes us and produces endorphins and serotonin. Laughing regularly can ward off depression and help you sleep better and generally enjoy life more. We even call people who make us laugh ‘a real tonic’.

Right now, if you force a smile onto your face 3 times in a row, you can even feel the small shot of serotonin you just fired into your body from your brain as it associates that within you…

Humour frees up restricted and limiting thinking. In my experience, all good teachers, therapists and leaders have instinctively known how to use humour. Good hypnotherapy training needs it, good hypnotherapy needs its appropriate use too. See how much truly exists in your day-to-day existence and think of injecting more. Especially in your hypnotherapy training!

Beth Was Ready to Quit Her Job

 

I received an email from a woman, we’ll call her Beth.  She contacted me from a post I had made about accent reduction.  While my primary business is in the area of presentation skills coaching and voice and speaking improvement, I often times take on clients that have the desire to reduce their accents to further their business success.

 

Beth came to me about 8 weeks ago. When Beth found me she was ready to quit her job, a nice position as a department manager, which I begged her not to do.  The day she came in for her assessment, I learned that while she had been in this position for a decent length of time, she most recently had been required to make a number of presentations.  Beth was not only terrified of public speaking but she believed she could not do it and was a big failure because of that. In addition to the general blanket statement fear of public speaking she was also familiar with the incredible presentation skills of her predecessor and struggling with a heavy accent. No matter the format, the content, the size of the audience, formal or not, Beth was so terrified of public speaking, giving presentations that she was willing to quit a job she loved and was very good at, not to mention a job that paid a nice salary.  Beth’s fear of public speaking was intense but I’d seen this type of fear on many occasions in the past.

 

 The First Day – There is Hope!

 

The first day I met Beth, her initial consultation I assured her that I could help her, that was all she needed to know at the time that there was hope.  Beth literally cried in our first meeting, because she truly believed there was no hope.  I made an assessment in our first meeting based on what I thought she needed, coupled with what she thought she needed and then I created a plan to make it happen.  It was very clear to me that in addition to tackling her intense fear of public speaking, I also had to address her disbelief in her ability to do a presentation and to boost her very low self-confidence.

 

The first thing I do with a client like Beth, one who struggles with extreme fear of public speaking, is to dissect and address the actual fears.  Studies have been done on the most often recorded fears of public speaking and some of Beth’s were similar. After all, public speaking is one the all time biggest fears listed by people across the globe.

I started with an in depth conversation with Beth about what her fears were, if she could pin point them. Beth knew exactly what she was afraid of with regards to speaking.

 

As I cover each fear, I like to teach my clients that indeed, those fears could become reality, BUT, there are strategies they can put in place to help ensure that the chance of those fears really occurring becomes minimal. It’s when a client does not have any strategy or belief that maybe this won’t happen, that they focus only on the fear and then yes, it usually happens.

 

One of Beth’s fears was, “what will people think” they dialogue for that fear includes a lengthy discussion on how that fear is 99% based on a fear in our head that is not real in our audiences head. I pointed out to Beth that the majority of the audience would not be thinking what she was thinking and how damaging it could be to her if, while in mid-presentation she started thinking about what they were thinking. It was at this time in the conversation I pointed out something I believe to be very true to her. Most people are relatively consumed with thinking about themselves, that they are not racking up to much thought on good, bad or indifference with a speaker. Harsh words, but decently true.

 

So, we laid out all of Beth’s fears, which honestly, were not that many and pretty typical of someone who fears public speaking. Beth’s fears included:

 

  • What if I mess up?
  • What if I can’t remember how to use my notes and forget important information?
  • What if everyone thinks I’m bad and compares me to my predecessor who was a great presenter?
  • What if I can’t get the words in my head out of my mouth?

 

The truth was, every one of these things had happened to Beth before, a number of times and it paralyzed her.  I knew self-confidence was going to be a big issue with her and I needed to help restore it.  Most often, it has been my experience that self-confidence plays a huge part in fear of public speaking.

 

So, one by one we went to work dispelling and creating a plan for each fear.

 

Remove the Power of the Fear

 

The first fear we went after was her fear of messing up. First and foremost I needed to remove the power of that fear. Yes, you may mess up, how devastating would that be? Not to minimize the fear but to put it in perspective, it’s not death, it’s not loosing your job, a car accident, a health issue. It’s highly likely to get on the other side of messing up in a public speech and be okay, actually even learn how to do it better next time.

 

Beth and I discussed worse case scenarios for messing up and she gained a new perspective on just how catastrophic messing up really was.

Next, we created a strategy which included a practice plan, a delivery strategy and a few mantras that promoted success.  I also worked with her on recovery strategies if she did mess up.  One, you stop, you breath, you tell your audience the truth, not that you totally messed up, but that you need a minute.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying, “excuse me, I believe I need to rephrase that”, “wait, I need to collect my thoughts for a moment” or something to that effect.

I also discussed with Beth just how important it was to not think about what the audience was thinking while she was speaking. Nothing can de-rail a speaker faster than to start thinking about how poorly he/she is doing while giving a speech. In addition, I told Beth that she needed to try and focus on the people in the room that were giving her positive feedback in the form of smiles, nodding their head in agreement. I told her to make sure and not focus on the person that was scowling or zoning out because it was highly possible that those non-verbal reactions had nothing to do with her anyway.

Beth’s Big Issue

 

 

Next fear, and this was a big one for her, what if I can’t follow my notes and forget important information.  Notes were a big issue for Beth.  In the past, the strategies that she had used for delivering content, her notes, had not worked, at all.  The problem was, I quickly figured out, was that Beth was trying to deliver presentations using the same style as her predecessor, and that style did not work for her.  We went through all possible options available to her for notes to deliver from and then we just started with one and had a plan to try them all until we found the one that worked best for her. I have seen far to many instructors say you have to do it one way or the other. I believe it is essential to find what works for you, because what works for one, may not work at all for another when it comes to delivery notes.

 

Our first attempt included a technique that was more scripted, primarily because this is what she thought would work the best for her. I then helped her craft her speech on these notes, with bullet points and then she tried this technique out at her next presentations. I could not wait for the report, but alas, this technique did not work for her after all. Beth got lost in the content, lost her place in the script a number of times and even forgot to look down on occasion.

 

So, we moved on to the next strategy which was create index cards with short phrases of key words by topic that would trigger information that she knew a lot about.  It turned out, this technique worked very well for her because all she really needed were memory cues.  Victory!  I’ve always believed each person needs to figure out what style works for them. YAY! Beth had a success under her belt which is what I really needed to happen to help build her self-confidence so she would start believing she could do this.

 

Creating Her Own Style

 

Next up, a tough one, what if everyone thinks I’m bad and not good at giving presentations like my predecessor.  Well, fear was even more tied into her self-confidence than the other two.  First, I had to help her understand that she was not her former boss and she needed to create a style of her own.  She was very different and that was a good thing, and that we needed to focus on her strengths and create “her” style instead of her constant efforts to be “him”.  I got her on board with this idea and we went to work creating the style that best represented what she brought to the table.  I spent a great deal of time pointing out all the great things she brought to the table, like her incredible skill with data and visuals.  In her next presentation she focused on her strengths, what she was good at and began to settle into her new style and used index cards with keyword phrases.  Another victory for her!  After this speech, for the first time ever I heard her say, “It actually went pretty well”.  This was huge considering every other speech she had reported was “really bad” or “horrible”.

Help….I Cant Speak!!!

 

Great! Now, it was time to tackle Beth’s last fear which was, what if I can’t get the words in my head out of my mouth.  I hear this fear from almost every client I work worth and that’s whether they are afraid of public speaking or not. Now, with Beth, just like with the other fears we had already address, this fear was very big for her as she struggled to communicate what was in her head in writing and speaking and had been this way for many, many years. I might add that while we are in America, Beth, is from another country and while she has a moderate accent her English is excellent.

 

It became immediately clear to me how very important it was for me to teach her how to say exactly what she was thinking and then re-craft the words, instead of trying to figure out the best way to craft the words in her head before she let them out of her mouth. If we approached this fear that way, well, Beth would never say anything out of fear!  Once we got the thoughts out of her head, then we could start cultivating the best ways to re-craft them and then basically put them back for a redo when she made the presentation.

 

I might add that Beth is excellent at her job, very excellent in fact, but because she has been so afraid of what people are going to think or say about her speaking for so long that she has created a major block.  In fact, it was almost impossible for her to get any words out of her head because she has so strongly convinced herself that her words will come out wrong or bad.  But, by working through the other three fears first, her self-confidence was already improving so she was more prime to believe that maybe she did have something to say that was worth something and that maybe she could get the words out.

This approach meant that Beth would tell me what she wanted to say, we’d write it down, kind of like a story, then re-craft the dialogue to make it sound more like how she wanted and then pull out bullet points and place them on cards and then she was ready to go.

 

After a few tries with that type of strategy, Beth started to believe that she did, in fact know what she was talking about and that maybe, just maybe, she really could communicate that. Beth’s last presentation was successful. I got positive feedback from her which was awesome. But for me, the best part is for Beth to see that those fears that paralyzed her were really just that, fears, something to look at, create a solution for and move on. Beth is not finished yet, she will work with me a little longer, but she has made the most amazing strides and is no longer spending sleepless nights before presentations and then beating herself up after them. Beth has released her fears and now places her focus and energy on creating strategies that work and help her give better presentations. It is by addressing Beth’s fears, looking at worse case scenarios and then creating solutions, that we have been able to get her past a major hurdle; her desire to quit her job because of her terror of presentations.

It is possible to get past your fear of public speaking and craft and deliver amazing and captivating presentations, it’s all in finding a technique that works for you and applying it.

Katty Perry Overcomes Her Breakup Through Hypnosis

Katy Perry has recently split from her ex-boyfriend John Mayer. After finding out that Mayer cheated on her with Lauren McHale, she decided to part ways. Sources say Katy is devastated after the split and has now decided to use hypnotherapy to overcome the breakup.

 

The Problem With Cheats

For many who are in love, finding out that your partner has cheated on you can be devastating. In most cases you may not have any idea that your partner is out playing the field. One day you’re in love thinking of marriage, children and a life time of happiness, next you find out the truth about the cheating rat!

It can be hard, because love is such a strong emotion. Many clients, who come to me in Katty Perry’s situation, have split up with their partner years before, but they still can’t get the thoughts of their ex out of their head. Many stay awake at night, and everything you see, hear or do reminds you of the cheating ex.

Often the ex-partner has moved on, while you are left alone in self-pity. These constant thoughts become your barrier to creating new relationships.

How Did Katy Perry Use Hypnosis To Overcome Her Ex?

A common technique hypnotherapist use top help people overcome their cheating ex is the “Falling Out of Love” technique.

Most people who still have their ex on their mind, interrupting their dreams, those who are still emotionally attached to their ex, tend think about the ex’s positives, the little quirks they liked about their ex. This keeps the memory alive and the fire still burning.

The falling out of love technique helps the client re-focus. Rather than focusing on the good times, the therapist will help the client focus on the negatives, the pain and all those small things that irritated you. When done through hypnosis, these thoughts, this new perspective becomes automatically. Soon the positive emotional link with your ex will be shattered, allowing you to forget about the ex-partner, letting you move on with your life.

Falling Out of Love

This a brief explanation of the falling out of love technique. I have not added the relaxation part of the session prior to the technique, nor have I added the wake up.

  1. Prior to the session ask the client to write two list. One a list of all the things the clients likes about the ex, the positive memories, the good times. Write a second list of all the negatives, the bad times, the irritations. (the second list should be much longer then the first)
  2. In trance, ask the client to recall all the positive memories in a disassociated state. Get them to see the memories as pictures or photographs.
  3. Get the client to break state and then one my one bring up each negative memory, associate the client, get them to re-live this event, as if they are there. Use all the senses “what can you see, hear,…how do you feel” build up their negative feeling, anchoring these emotions to the memory of the ex.
  4. Go back to the good memories, and deepen the dissociation. Make the image black and white, push the image further away, turn down the volume, take away and delete any emotional attachment.
  5. Return to the negative, the irritations, the pain and build these up. Make the film big and bright, turn up the volume, use surround sound, make the film and I-Max screen, use Technicolor and make the client step in to the movie so they feel that they are there. Keep asking questions about the negative memory “how does that make you feel, now?”
  6. Keep repeating this until the client only recalls negativity when they think about their ex.
