Evolve Your Mind Create Choice

Evolve Your Mind Create Choice

35000!!

On the average day each adult will have around 35000 decisions to make. Each decision has multiple choices and it’s your mind’s job to make the best choice for you

An example of making a conscious choice is when you go to a restaurant; you pick up a menu and before you is a large list of options. Instantly your subconscious mind discards a number of dishes – maybe you are allergic to nuts or there is a particular meal that you dislike.

Often you are left with 4 possibilities; maybe a salad (because you want to lose weight), a pasta dish because it’s filling but sounds healthy and two chicken dishes both served with chips; not healthy but really tasty.

Your conscious mind now debates these options. Part of your mind argues – it’s summer and you want to lose weight, you want to look good, slim and trim when you are lying on the warm beech in your tight bikini. Your summer vacation is just around the corner you know deep down that the salad dish is the best option. Buuuuut, the another part of your mind reasons; the chicken stuffed with fatty cheese, wrapped in smoked bacon, served with chips and a BBQ sauce taste sooooo nice….plus….you can always start your diet next week

Most decisions, in fact most of your choices are made unconsciously. When you get up to walk you don’t consciously choose which leg; the right one or the left one, to move first, you just start to walk. When you drive to work each day, you don’t sit down and consciously plan your route, like a well programmed sat nav, instead you drive there without thinking.

This is the subconscious at its best, reacting in unconscious thought.

Subconscious Reactions

A reporter was stood at the side of a baseball field interviewing the star player as his teammates practiced pitches behind them.  Half way through the interview, the star play suddenly turns and catches a wrongly hit baseball that was flying towards the interviewer’s face, saving her life. The star player had reacted without thinking.

Imagine that he had to consciously choose his options. A ball is flying towards the reporter stood in front on me at 80mph towards, and has a distance of 40 meters to travel. Im currently stood side on, which means i can privet on my right foot turn and catch the ball with my left hand or I can reach with my left hand saving the time i need to turn my body… that would be ridiculous, ending with the ball hitting the reporter in the face.

You have two minds, one is a conscious, analytical mind which is slower when it comes to making decisions because it has to way up consciously all the data, all detail, all the stimulus’s. The other mind is the emotional, habitable mind that reacts instantaneously without thinking.

The mind has evolved this way to help you make better choices to help keep you alive. The problem is, the way the mind has evolved to help you make better choices, has a negative side effect, it also makes poor choices

Fear Created From Experiences

This is why some people are afraid of public speaking, afraid of small harmless house spiders and any other stimulus which isn’t a real threat. Your emotional habitable mind creates quick decisions based on association; my mum was scared when she seen a spider which means i must be scared to – there is no logic to this limiting belief

Did you know that public speaking is the number one fear in many phobic polls? This is because many of us go through a negative public speaking experience when we are young. This reminds me of a client I was working with called Sara who always got highly anxious even at the thought of public speaking, job interviews and anytime she was the centre of attention.

This all stemmed from a negative school experience.  When at school Sara got asked to stand in front of the audience and to read out loud shakespeare’s romeo and juliet. Being dyslexic she really struggled to read and pronounce the words, stuttering she felt highly embarrassed as her classmates laughed at her poor performance. She looked pleadingly at the teacher who replied sternly “carry on sara we haven’t got all day”

Many of us have negative experiences like this one, a negative experience that stays with us. The mind when in a new situation looks for a frame of reference. When Sara was offered her first job interview, her mind made a connection. Job interview = public speaking = anxiety, she now, without knowing why, felt anxious about a task, the job interview, that she had never undertaken before.

This quick automated response happens in all areas of our lives. If I asked you to think of a can of cola, you will think of a famous brand, as we have been influenced by the brand’s marketing campaign. This is why we pay more money for items that are truly inferior. In many blind food test it is often the supermarket brand that is rated higher in quality than the famous brand.

To live a fulfilled live, you need to evolve your mind. You need to delete the habits and automated processes that are no longer useful to you, you need to make more conscious choices and you need to create positive ways of automatically responding to different stimuluses.

Create Your Own Reactions

A group of friends and myself recently climb snowdon, the highest peak in Wales. Rather than follow the standard path we went of route and scrambled up the side of the mountain. For those of you that don’t know scrambling is a mix between a hike and rock climbing but with no ropes.

Imagine this; you are half way up the steep slope of snowdon. As you look down you notice the fog has settled, its like looking into the abist. An eerie feeling settles over the group. As we climb higher the rock becomes more unstable, small pebbles come loose, the holds are smooth and harder to grip. There is no way down, we have to keep going. My heart beats faster as the climb becomes harder. I stop and as I look down at my friends climbing below, I see a massive boulder come loose above where my friends are climbing.

Time slows down, everything is in slow motion. The rock picks up momentum bouncing down the side of the steep mountain. Quickly I realise that there is no escape, someone will die today and I will witness it.

Whenever you are in danger your body sends a rapid signal to your brain “danger” overwhelming the amygdala, which is the part of the brain which fires of the fight, flight or freeze  response. When a massive heavy rock is bouncing towards you your only choice is to flight, to get out of the way, to get down the mountain.

Logically this doesn’t make sense. You are holding on the mountain face, you can’t go left and you can’t go right, if you try to make your way down you will still be in the path of the rock. But the flight response is so powerful, that you are compelled to move.

But this automatic response isn’t the only choice. You can instead turn off the emotional mind and use your analytical brain. The group instead of trying to get down the mountain, instead made the choice to stay where they were. Instead of moving they push themselves into the rockface, making their body, the target, as small as possible. The rock bounced over them, missing one of the climbers by a couple of inches.

What you focus on your feel

If you focus on the rock crashing down towards you, you will feel fear. If instead you choose to focus on what action you can take you will feel in control. This is the same for any situation, if the public speaker focuses the feeling of nervousness they will feel anxious, if instead they focus on how their will inspire the audience they will feel more confident.

The more you focus on a positive response to a stimulus the more this feeling will be associated to the activity. You will know this to be true. How many times have you been invited to a job interview and days before the interview date  you imagine yourself being anxious, answering the questions wrongly, imagining the interviewer looking down on you. If your focus is on the potential negatives you will feel negative on the day in question.
But if you practice being confident, if you imagine confident, if you focus on the feeling of confidence you will be more confident, because what you focus on you feel, creating a new positive automated system in your kind, evolving your mind.

3 Quick Ways To Stay Inspired

3 Quick Ways To Stay Inspired

You know when you are inspired – you feel energized, confident, you start each task ASAP and put your all into everything you do. Your inspiration creates motivation and action, your inspiration positively impacts on others, you feel like a new you.

101 coaching techniques

The Glass is Half Full

Your perspective will change your motivation levels – is the glass is half full or is the glass is half empty? When feel down think about how you perceive the task you are on. If you are using “away from” language, change this to create a positive goal.

Change away from goals to towards goals.

  • I want to give up smoking (away from) – I will be a none smoker (towards)
  • I don’t want to be fat anymore (away from) – I will be fit and healthy (towards)
  • I need to get away from having no money (away from) – I will be financial stable (towards)

This works because your minds makes images for the words you use. If you imagine a smoker, overweight person or yourself struggling with no money you will feel the negative associated feelings attached to these thoughts – highly unmotivational

Instead if you visualize yourself being successful; a none smoker, fit and healthy or financially successful you will feel motivated towards these goals

Look Into The Future

Often people become overwhelmed by the amount of task, duties or milestones required to achieve their goal. The feeling of being overwhelmed is like to blanket covering and smothering your motivation. Even the thought of overwhelmness can demotivate you.

To get inspired dont focu on the tasks you have to complete, instead focus on the outcome. What will happen when you are successful, what positive impact will achieving this goal have on your life, finances, relationships, career

This outcome focus creates inspiration and the inspiration will create action

coaching business in a box

Feed the Inspiration

Stressed people can become more agitated because they stop eating, drinking (water) or lack sleep. You need to feed and water your body to stay motivated. Without food and water your body and brain shuts down to help you to sleep   – which is why you will feel tiered.

Always have a bottle of water in front of you (easy reach) and drink 2 liters each day. Also ensure you have breakfast, dinner and tea and snack healthy between meals. If when completing a task you feel a headache coming on or you feel the first signs tiredness ask yourself “when did I last eat or drink(water)?”

This key and easy to implement step is often overlooked. Once implemented you see the impact this has on your overall state and inspiration

5 Ways To Kill Low Self Esteem

5 Ways To Kill Low Self Esteem

Your selfesteem increase or decreases depending on how you value yourself. If your confidence in your own self-worth, skills and abilities lowers, so does your self-esteem. To improve your self-esteem you need to know how you add value to your friendship group, your colleagues and the world.

People with low self-esteem constantly worry about other people’s opinions which often creates procrastination, procrastination lowers self-esteem creating a viscus cycle

You need to kill the things that lower your self-esteem, as self-esteem effects our relationships, our careers and our future life.

101 coaching techniques

Low Self Esteem Killer 1. Kill The Positive Vampires

There are lots of positive vampires in the world. You know these people, there the people who walk into a room and suck the fun, the positively out of every situation.

Positive vampires don’t just see the glass as half empty, they drain the glass so there is nothing left. Vampires are skilled at taking a big bite and sucking all the joy out of your life. Once bitten it is easy to join their clan, becoming as negative as they are, lowering your self-esteem.

How to Kill the Vampire

Vampires attack at night when you are not expecting it. Often you don’t realise that a negative vampire is effecting your mood until it is too late. Be aware of negative vampires in your social groups and stay away from them. When you hear the moans coming, leave the room, when caught in a negative conversation interrupt them by asking a silly question and smiling, as this breaks their negative pattern, giving you time to slip away.

Surround yourself with positive, happy and joyful people – this is the garlic that will keep the negative vampire away. Moods are catching, if you socialise with glass half full peers, there positively, love for life and happiness will spread to you. Once full of life, your self-esteem will increase

Low Self Esteem Killer 2. Kill Your Compliment Barrier

Do you ignore compliments and praise? A key difference between people with low self-esteem and strong confidence, is that people with low self-esteem don’t like to hear nice things said about them. And when they do, they think this praise is a lie.

Low self-esteem is linked to your self-worth. If you ignore approval and positive feedback you won’t link these positive attributes to your identity, effecting your levels of self-esteem. Often people take this one step further. Not only do they delete peoples praise but people with low self-esteem also list their own faults.

How to Kill the Barrier

Accept compliments. When people give you positive feedback, thank them and carry on with your task. At home reflect on all the nice compliments you have received and became aware of the common commendations that are given by all.

Rather than list your own defects, instead list your skills, strengths and qualities. Even stand in front of a mirror and praise yourself; your looks, your style, your personality traits.

The more you like about yourself, the more you believe other peoples praise and the more you are aware of your own skills and qualities the more positive you will be

Low Self Esteem Killer 3. Kill The I Compare Man

Comparison websites are highly popular as you can easily see, as an example, the comparisons for car insurance. The comparison website compares all aspects of the advertised companies allowing you to choose the best company for you. For money saving strategies comparison is a great tactic but for self-esteem, comparison is the worst option.

People will often compare themselves to other people, looking at other peoples strengths and comparing these to their own weaknesses. This uneven scale is heavily weighted to one side and can only make you feel negative about yourself. Rarely do people compare their own strengths to other peoples weaknesses to increase self-esteem.

How to Kill the Comparison

When you find yourself comparing your weakness to another person’s skill, change this by asking yourself “What steps do I need to take to develop this skill?” By having a plan to develop yourself, increases motivation and your self-esteem. You can follow up this question by checking what personal resources you have that will help to develop this skill quickly.

Low self-esteem comes from feeling there is nothing you do. By creating a plan of action to develop yourself you give yourself the control and with control comes higher levels of self-esteem.

Low Self Esteem Killer 4. Kill The Frown

You can always notice the people with low self-esteem as they rarely smile. There negative thoughts are internal, and as they go inside themselves to think about their problems, their lack of qualities and listen to their own negative self-talk their low self esteem increases. This emotional rollercoaster is shown on their face as a frown.

How to Kill the Frown

Many studies have highlighted that if you force yourself to smile you will feel better about yourself.

As you smile the muscles in your face send signals that are interpreted by your brain, releasing positive chemicals in your body to help you feel better. A study with a group manic depressives highlighted this result. They were asked to put coloured dots around their house; inside cupboards doors, on mirrors, etc. Ask they wondered around their house they were asked to laugh for 10 minutes every time they came across a coloured dot.

After a couple of weeks they group were reassessed and all were found to have improved.

This also works with body language. If you stand tall and proud, with your head held high you will feel better about yourself.

There more you laugh and smile the better you will feel.

Low Self Esteem Killer 5. Kill The Problem Focus

Your choice Problem or Solution? If your perspective is always the problem you will find it hard to increase your self-esteem and motivation, because negative emotions are associated with problems. It is good to predict potential potholes when working towards a goal, as this allows you prepare your resources, but in the main you need to be more solution focused.

Once highlighted a problem can expand in your mind’s eye. When you see problem after problem, difficulty after difficulty your focus is always negative, you start telling yourself that you will never be able to work through all of this. You predict so many potential problems that you feel overwhelmed and under resourced. With this heavy weight on your shoulders you feel that you are the failure, effecting your self-esteem.

How to Kill The Problem

To kills the problem perspective you need ask empowering questions that allow you to focus on the solutions. Having a solution focus helps you recognise your resources, past successes and a solution focus attitude empowers you to take action.

Each time you take action your self-esteem improves.

Solution focused questions to ask yourself

  • What do I need to do to achieve my goal?
  • What are my choices?
  • What steps shall I take first?
  • What have I done previously that can help me to achieve this goal?
  • Who else can help me?

5 Survival Skills That Teach Life Lessons

5 Survival Skills That Teach Life Lessons

Imagine being shipwrecked on an island with no hope of rescue for weeks on end. Would you survive?

Most people wouldn’t. The skills needed to light a fire, trap and kill animals and to build a shelter are long forgotten. On survival training courses, they teach you that having the knowledge to use the skills our ancestors relied on isn’t enough, you also need to creativity, determination and self-motivation to survive.

101 coaching techniques

Survival Skill 1 Creating Fire

Creating a fire is an immediate necessity in a survival situation. A fire has many purposes for the lone survivor;

  • Fire keeps you warm
  • Fire cooks your food
  • Fire can be used to deter animals wanting to enter your campsite
  • Fire can be a signal to passing ships
  • Fire creates a sense of comfort

Lighting a fire with no matches is hard work.  You need Heat x Fuel x Oxygen; rub two pieces of wood together and the heat generated by the friction will create a hot ember. This ember can be added to a pile of tinder, blow on the tinder and you create fire.

Life Lesson 1 – Keep Going

When lighting a fire the additional element you need for the process is determination. It can be highly frustrating rubbing two sticks together only to find that you ember sizzles out before you can create the fire.

Repetition is the key here. You need to keep trying and practicing, and at some point you ember will spark. It is the same with any skill you want to learn. At first you will get it wrong, you will want to give up and you will often feel frustrated. But if you become determined, have patience and keep trying you will eventually learn that skill.

The lesson here is repetition pays off and repetition is the key to mastering any new skill

Survival Skill 2 Staying Hydrated

We need water to live. Without water you will die in about 3 days. About 55-60% of our body is water which alone highlights the importance of drinking h20. On average you need to drink around 2 liters of water a day which is why in a survival situation sourcing and drinking fluids is vital.

Life Lesson 2  – Keep Drinking

Water effects the whole of your body – how you think and act and water is proven to

  • Boosts Immune System
  • Natural Headache Remedy
  • Prevents Cramps & Sprains
  • You Perform Better
  • Puts You in a Good Mood

Most people put drinking water off due to laziness. They would rather be thirsty then walk a short distance to the kitchen. To solve this simple problem, bring a 2 liter bottle of water to work, once it has been consumed you know you have drank your daily amount

The lesson here is be prepare and stay hydrated

25 free coaching tools

Survival Skill 3 Stay Sheltered

Shelter is a key survival element. A shelter creates warmth, keeps you dry and safe. Mentally a shelter boost your motivation, you will see your shelter as your house, your home, your castle. When out hunting in the cold, you know that you will soon be returning to camp, to a shelter, fire, food and water.

The environment of the camp creates a positive experience, this where you can rest, make tools, repair weapons, store wood, food and water.

Life Lesson 3 – Keep a Positive Environment

Your base is positioned in the best environment, near a clean water supply, close to a lookout post for passing ships, near to a signal fire and close to your food source/animal traps. Having the perfect environment helps you be at your best mentally

Imagine having a signal fire so far away from you base, when a ship is spotted you become highly stressed knowing that you are going to miss this rare opportunity to be rescued

The lesson here is, understand which environment suits you the best, which environment helps you to be at your peak performance.

Certain environments in life can be stressful;  bad ergonomics can be demotivating and having to travel long distances for resources can limit your output. Negative people can affect your production, stress and motivation, particular management styles suit/don’t suit your style of working and the environments values maybe cause friction with your own.

Knowing which environment, peoples personality traits and required resources create the best version of you will allow you to set, work towards and achieve all of your work/life goals. Create the environment that best suits you.

Survival Skill 4 Find Food

Without food you will you die. As your energy levels drop from the lack of calorie intake you will find it harder to motivate yourself to catch and kill your prey, this decreases your calorie intake further, creating a vicious cycle.

In a survival situation you need to be pro-active and to take steps to make the environment and your resources work for you. Often people use their energy on catching food, whereas if you pre-planned and prepared, you can gather food easily (depending on the environment) saving your energy and increasing your motivation.

It is easy to think that the best way to gather food is to sharpen a big stake and run after your prey. This doesn’t work for two simple reasons, first you use a lot of energy running after prey and secondly, animals are skilled at avoiding predators and will be long gone before you get anywhere near them, unless you are a skilled hunter.

Life Lesson 4 –Keep Planning

Instead of brawn use your brain. Make capturing animals an easy, energy free task.

  • Find an animal path (animals tend to use the same path over and over again)
  • Make a trap; simple hole, covered with sticks and leafs or a wire with a noose hidden on the floor, attached to a strong branch
  • Check your trap in the morning

The lesson here is to think before you act, plan and prepare and use intelligence not just muscle

coaching business in a box

Survival Skill 5 Stay Put

After a couple of days surviving you may believe that rescue wont happen. With that mind-set it is easy to pack your bag and to try to make you way back to civilization.

The danger here is that you may easily get lost, you may injure yourself or you may be walking away from shelter, fire, food and water. Also it is a lot easier for a rescue party to spot your wreckage, camp and signal fires, then it is tracking you in the wilderness.

The advice in survival situations is stay close to the crash site. It may take a while but a rescue party will come and they will start in your last known position.

Life Lesson 5 – Keep Focused

When working towards a goal – to be rescued from a survival situation, to run a marathon or to be a millionaire, and it doesn’t matter what goal you are working towards, there will always be a point when your motivation drops. With low motivation you rarely focus on the job in hand, instead you procrastinate and think about taking another option.

The lesson here is you need to keep focused, keep motivated and keep believing in yourself (or that rescue will come)

When you are in a low think of ways to increase your motivation; imagine yourself being successful with the task in hand, think about the positive outcome of achieving the task and think about the negative consequences of talking another option

5 Tips for Daily Motivation

5 Tips for Daily Motivation

Many motivational articles talk about how to get motivated for big, long term goals. What most people need is daily motivational tips for when they slum in the hear and now.

Gaining motivation for a task or daily goal is easier then you think. Motivation is created through your thoughts and emotional associations and these 5 daily motivational tips will help you boost your motivation so you can achieve all your daily task.

101 coaching techniques

Daily Motivation Tip 1 – Fuzzy Goals

Personal daily motivation is linked to your daily goal. Increase motivation by making each daily goal clear. If your daily goal isn’t specific your motivation level will drop.

Change the fuzziness of your goal into a focused goal. Visualize completing your goal and imagine what the outcome to achieving this goal will be. Plan 3 steps required to achieve this goal and do the easiest step first.

  1. Visualise your daily goal
  2. Imagine completing this goal
  3. Become aware of the outcome from this achievement
  4. Plan 3 steps you need to complete to achieve this goal
  5. Start with the easiest step

Daily Motivation Tip 2 – Big Rewards

We are motivated by pain and pleasure. When working towards a daily task, at some point, your motivation will drop. Its at this point that procrastination sets in, anxiety around the task increases and self esteem drops. In this state you will never finish your task.

To change your motivation levels change your focus. Instead of thinking about how hard the task is, instead, think about what will happen if you don’t complete this task – think about the negative outcome, as pain can be a big motivator.

As you start to get more motivated, plan a reward that you can give yourself once you complete a task/step (for a larger goal) or achieve the daily goal.

Rewards can be anything that you desire that will help you stay focused on the task in hand;

  • A 10 minute break
  • A nice cup of tea
  • To finish early for the day
  • A weekend away
  • A cash bonus

Daily Motivation Tip 3 – Energetic Exercise or Not

We all know that exercise is good for our mind and body. When working on  a daily goal you can sometimes work yourself into the ground.

There is a difference between a required break and a lazy procrastinated induced stop. Sometimes you need to have a break to either relax in a quite room or by going for a stroll in the local park.

Some people need to recharge their batteries by having time alone and others get their energy from being around their colleagues and family, chatting and laughing.

Some people de-stress through energetic exercise and others de-stress through yoga or by stretching their legs.

  • Become aware of when you need a break (ask – if I have a break for 10 minutes will my output improve?)
  • Decide which method will help you get motivated – exercise or rest?
  • Which would energise you the most being alone or with others?

Daily Motivation Tip 4 – Do It, Done It

People will often burn themselves out by doing to much.

Ask, what needs doing today, do it and then once you are done go home! If you split your weekly task down in to daily chunks on a Monday morning, it makes working towards each daily task, mentally easy.

Knowing that you will soon be going home (reward) after the tasked is completed, is also highly motivational.

  • On a Monday record all the task that need completing this week
  • Allocate a day to each task and activity
  • Work only on those task allocated to a particular day
  • Once completed go home
  • Return the next day and start the next set of task feeling fresh and motivated

Daily Motivation Tip 5 – A Cup of Tea and a Chat

There are certain people in our lives that really motivate us. these can be friends colleagues or family member’s.

When feeling stressed think about the person who can best help you – do you need someone who can make you laugh, someone who will listen or someone to soundboard off?

Call them, Skype them or take them for a cup of tea. Once your batteries are recharged and motivation is once again high return to your daily task
