The brain releases dopamine when you see a task being completed.  It doesn’t matter if the task is big or small, the mind instead focuses on the pleasure of having completed something.

If you have a bog task, break this down into several small task, and as you complete each small step tick this off on a sheet. Each tick will set of the pleasure response in your mind

This even works for task you can remember, so write it down and tick it off

When delivering a speech there will always be a message behind the words. By thinking of the speech meaning you oration changes; your tone is different, your micro expressions alter, your gestures and body language communicate the same meaning as the words of the speech

Write down your goal

 

This seems an easy step, but there is a psychological motivation pull in writing down your goal. Once your goal is in writing you feel committed. Even better, write it down a few times and give it to others you know and respect

 

When you record your goal to paper you start to imagine acting out your goal, it becomes real in your mind. As you visualize this goal, and how you life will positively change as you achieve your goal, you feel positive

 

It is this positive emotion that will help you take real action, you will be drawn to this desired pleasure of achieving your objective

Step Up – Step 2

 

Talk about it, do it

 

As you focus on your goal again you start to get excited. You start to think of the different actions you have to take and the different possibilities.

 

It is easy to get caught in a loop here. As you think about options, you think about further choices, which creates more options. Soon though, you can get lost in thought.

 

You need to take action. Momentum creates motivation. As you create options, pick one and commit to it. This might be the best option, or it it be a learning curve

 

The key though is to do something productive, take action and increase your motivation

Become urgent

 

We find it easy to put things off, to leave it until tomorrow. Tomorrow becomes next week, and next week becomes next year

 

Instead get urgent. Think about what will happen if you don’t achieve your goal, your objective? The pain of not being successful creates a positive urgent panic, that makes you take action

Find the Liar #1

 

Lying is an art form, as we naturally don’t want to lie.

 

An untrained liar will give away their lie, subconsciously, in the words and sentences they use to state the lie.

 

People well either have  a planned lie or will lie when put on the spot. The lie is spotted by the way the liar speaks.

 

When put on the spot, the liar will often use the exact words the accuser used. This is because its takes too long to think of a good answer, and they know, if they don’t answer quickly they will look suspicious.

 

An example would be; accuser – “did you steal my book?”

Liars – “no, I didn’t steal your book” Whereas an innocent would often reply with “book, what book?” or “whats been stolen?” as they will be confused by the question

 

Some liars will have a prepared answer, especially if they know they will be accused. Liars will often answer in a linear fashion, sticking only to the facts in chronological order. Humans just don’t speak this way, which is why you can tell that a person is lying.  Truthful people will often tell a story and as the story is progressing will naturally go off on a tangent or skip between time frames

Find the Liar #2

 

Find avoidance technique, find a liar

 

There are 3 ways hear a liar. The first is with silence. Liars have to think of their lie. When ask a question we often respond quickly, whereas a liar will have to think of a lie and check that it fits in with reality (to ensure they are not found out) this process takes a long time, creating an unnatural silence

 

Because we don’t want to lie, we will instead avoid the question. When you ask a liar a question “did you steal my book?” the liar will answer a different question “I prefer films instead of books”

 

Another example of listening to a liar is the words the liar uses. People will unconsciously use distancing language as this creates an internal feeling of disassociation

 

 

Bill Clinton famously saying “I did not have sex with that women” rather than saying her name, he distanced himself using the word “that” to avoid thinking about the person/situation.

Find the Liar #3

 

People speak with their body

 

If people speak with their body language then they must give telltale signs of deceit away with their posture and gestures

 

You can spot a liar by watching how they react. Here are a couple of visual cues to look at out for

 

  1.  Liars will subconsciously limit their arm movements looking more stiff then natural
  2. When lying we unconsciously try and stop the lie from coming out by covering our mouths with a finger
  3. When accused of lying we feel physically attacked. A liar will often feel uncomfortable lying to your face and will subconsciously turn their body away from yours  or step backwards, as they have a string desire to get away

Think Like There Are No Rules

 

Humans are governed by rules, we like processes, procedures, laws and boundaries. We sometimes think that we don’t want to be told what to do or how we should act (unless we believe that the rules enforced on you are against your values and beliefs) but deep down we want to know how we should behave in our “pack”

 

The problem here though, is that the rules stop your creativity. When an idea comes to mind you subconsciously break it down against your rules.

 

Instead turn the rules off, for the moment. If there were no rules, what would you do? How would you act? what are the possibilities?

Set Your Goal Up

 

“I want to lose weight I feel so fat!”

 

We hear this all the time. But weight loss isn’t the goal here, is it?

 

In actual fact the goal is to be happy. In this example feeling fat, creates the feeling of sadness. Take another goal example, “I want to be rich”

 

What’s the goal here? Not to be rich, its to feel secure. When setting goals, you need the look at the reason for wanting this goal, what is the emotional pull? Your goals should (and do but you don’t always realise this) have an emotional objective

Take Aim

 

The next step is to take your long term plan to achieve your goal and…..stick it in the bin!!

 

The weight loss goal plan looks something like this “cut out fatty food, chocolate and beer. Run 3 miles a week. Each month I will lose half a stone”

 

On paper it sounds like a good plan, it would probably work as well, if the goal setter didn’t give up, as they often do.

 

To keep goal focused you need a new approach. Don’t set a long term plan, instead set short term task and activities, that will gain you your emotional objective. For weight loss, you can have a “fruit week” or you can choose to try a new sport activity each month; running, gym, squash, swimming, hockey

 

By having short term task, the goal stays unique, interesting and fun. If you wanted to cut of chocolate for the rest of life you will have already done this, instead you can keep eating chocolate (or cut down, its up to you?) while losing weight by trying new task and activities

Shoot to Win

 

To win a football game you need team mates. To achieve your goal you need team mates too.

 

We find it easy to let ourselves down – we can give up as it doesn’t embarrass us, but if you let others down, you feel awkward, a loser, a letdown.

 

To achieve your goals, you need to gather others around you with the same goal, the same focus, the same enthusiasm. This group approach can compound your skill base, helping you to score quicker then you would on your own

Stop Being Confident #1

 

Confidence increases risk taking

 

Gamblers fall into this category all the time. On a particular night, lady luck is sitting on your side of the card table. You can’t lose! Each time you place a bet you win. The lucky streak increases your confidence, so you bet bigger and take more risk.

 

At one point in the night, after a few big wins, you take a big risk and go “all-in” knowing that lady luck is there with you. As the cards turn over you realize your mistake, you bet with your confident emotions not your logical brain. If you analysed that cards you would have know that the odds were against you and you would have bet safely

 

Being to confident isn’t a good trait. When  your overconfident you don’t listen to other peoples advice, you not logical way up the situation and you take all or nothing risk

Stop Being Confident #2

 

Confident people only take action when they feel confident

 

Lets first kill the myth that you are either confident or anxious. This simply isn’t true, you can be confident in one area of your life and fearful in another. One day you feel on top of the world, full of confidence and the next you feel unfulfilled and anxious.

 

Even the people you think are “always” confident aren’t. In the “evolve the mind” I talk about how emotions flow, you have ups and downs, good days and bad.

 

People who feel confident most of the time take action. This action often increase the level in confidence. But the problem here is when the confident person is having a bad day, they act in the opposite way to how they act when they are confident

 

This lack of confidence, creates a lack of action, which decreases the confidence level, creating a negative cycle which can be hard to break. People who don’t feel high levels of confidence have already learnt to take action when they don’t feel really confident. There norm state is enough to create movement.

Confidence can block progression

 

As a coach I am constantly learning news ways to support my clients to overcome fears and phobias and to help them evolve their mind.

 

I sometimes meet other coaches that I haven’t seen for a long time, coaches that I use to talk to at training events. When I ask where they have been for the past few years, they tell me that they have learnt all they need to know.

 

This confidence in their skill level has a detrimental effect as often the coach is using outdated techniques that take twice as long to have an effect on clients compared to fast therapy techniques that are having a massive impact on clients

 

To evolve you have to develop, always be willing to learn,
