The History of NLP

 

 

The co-founder of NLP, Richard Bandler has become an icon in the field of self development with NLP helping become become more confident, increase self esteem and to overcome phobias, anxiety and fears.

But few people can say they are at the standards Bandler sets. Richard Bandler tells us repeatedly that he uses what the client brings to the session to support them, and cures clients of phobias, anxiety and low confidence in a very short period of time, often in front of a large audience.

So, How Does Bandler Do It?

The Bandler Technique

Step 1. Bandler says rapport isn’t always necessary, if you need rapport establish it by matching behaviour

Step 2. Use the Meta Model to chunk down the clients model and challenge limiting beliefs

Example;

RB whats the matter? Needles RB what about needles?

Example; I have always been scared of needles

RB Always?

Step 3. Listen for Sensory Based Information and pay attention for what isn’t there

Example;

RB how did you make it worse? Pictures

Step 4. Make people become sick of their problem, up the pain of the problem as the pain is a great motivator and the routine of something even something they don’t like is familiar and comforting

Step 5. Get the Client to see their problem from a new perspective, dissociation and re-framing works well here

Step 6. Find New and Appealing Options, when people have to make a choice they make the best one

Step 7. Use Milton Model Language to Induce trance, Stack Realities embedding one story into another creates confusion, using pattern interrupts breaks learnt programmes and creates confusion.

Step 8. Change Sub-modalities and change the experience, create a new way of learning. TEST the outcome

Step 9 Use Humour throughout the session, humour loosens the clients serious attitude, and decreases fear and anxiety “you cant be scared of a phobia if your laughing at it”

Step 10 Create a New Strategy, if you take something away you have to replace it with something. Test and test the new strategy

Manchester Crisp Addict Is Cured By Hypnosis

Imagine eating over 21000 bags of crisp? This is what James Duckworth, 17, from Manchester did over a 10 yr period, consuming over 21g of salt a week.

 

James suffered from Selective Eating Disorder, for James the sight of “wet” foods such as baked beans enough to make him gag, so he turned to dry salty crisp as a replacement  “I was completely addicted to crisps. As long as the crisps were ready salted with very little flavour I would eat them.”

Selective Eating Disorder is often caused by a trauma associated with food. Many form this after having a traumatic experience as baby or young child. To overcome his eating problem James meet with London-based hypnotherapist Felix Economakis.

 

Trauma such as this can be relatively easy to overcome using hypnosis, NLP and Havening type therapies, often within 1-3 sessions (this varies depending of the clients experiences)

In James case he spent two hours with psychologist and clinical hypnotist Felix Economakis, at The Heath therapy clinic in North London and afterwards was able to try new foods for the first time.

 

This change in perspective when it comes to food, grew and James is now eating curries, strawberries and a whole range of delicious food, not bad for someone who had a diet of crisp for several years.

Unconsciously Changing Clients Personal Limitations During Conversation

Many clients arrive in therapy sessions for both life coaches and hypnotherapy sessions with limiting beliefs and negative personal generalisations. It is often these limiting beliefs that are stopping the clients from moving forward.

 

A therapist can use a variety of language patterns to support the client to reframe, reassess or to take a new perspective of their beliefs, creating new choices within the client’s map of the world.

 

Beliefs define the relationship between a client’s value and their causes, indicators and consequences. Beliefs are typically expressed in the form of

 

  • Complex equivalence (A “equals”, “is, “is equivalent to” or “means” B)
  • Cause-effect (A “causes (because)”, “makes”, “leads to”, “produces”, “results in” B).

 

As an example a clients limiting belief may be “I can’t get a date because I’m not confident” (cause and effect)

Breaking down limiting beliefs in conversation

 

To break the belief the therapist needs to reframe the statement/belief. This allows the client to look at the same situation from a new perspective. With a new perspective you have choice, which breaks the belief that they can only do it one way.

 

Often the therapist will have to use a variety of questioning and reframing statements to breakdown the client’s resistance, making change faster.

 

 

A different meaning. You can encourage the client to find a new meaning by reframing what the client has said, we call this a Redefine.

“So what you are saying is that you’re attractive enough to get a date?” The client has focused on the one negative with his statement, where you have found a hidden positive. A client who has image difficulties would have added this to their original statement.

 

 

There is always a consequence to your actions. A lot of clients live in the now and don’t think about the outcome of their situation. They just live with their problem, but knowing the consequence of their belief creates change, with the client thinking “I don’t want that to happen” or “I never thought where this would go”


“What would happen if you continued to question your confidence?”
Clients will often realise the outcome is a result they do not want, the pain behind this thought can be a motivator for change. Many clients don’t realise how their belief if not changed can grow often uncontrollably, the future focus often awakens clients to this realisation.

What is the positive intention behind the belief? Beliefs have been formed by the subconscious with a positive intention, by uncovering the intention or secondary gain the client will be aware of the reason of why they are saying/believing this statement.

“What’s good about being single?” what is the client achieving by being single? Maybe they don’t want to be hurt or don’t want to look a fool when asking someone out. This question can refocus the whole session allowing you to treat the cause.

 

 

Change the Frame Size. The focus of a client can be the clients barrier. Some will focus too much on the detail, while others at the opposite end of the scale will have a frame of reference that is too general.

 

“What specifically makes you not confident?” Gaining examples from the client, gathering specific detail and discussing individual parts of the belief/statement helps the client to focus in on specific points, changing the frame of reference which changes the emotional response.

 

Offer an example that is an exception to their belief. A client will have evidence that backs up their belief, the stronger the belief the more evidence they have. The belief may distort information to make it fit their world, in a way the client is blinded to the truth.

 

“I have a beautiful friend who loves dating shy people, she finds it endearing” Stating a believable truth alters the clients perception. It creates flexibility in their thinking allowing change to made easier. This can be delivered as examples or metaphors.

Create a new outcome. By proposing a shift in outcome you can change the client’s thinking, reframing their perception. With a new focus the client motivational level often changes.

 

“What changes can you make that will help females find you attractive?” The clients when questioned in terms of outcomes, can look at the same situation and find new possibilities for achieving the original goal.

The 10 Step Bandler Model for Fast Therapy

The co-founder of NLP, Richard Bandler has become an icon in the field of self development with NLP reaching from the sales room to phobia removal sessions. Millions of practitioners have studied NLP, gaining NLP qualifications and mastering the various powerful NLP techniques on offer.

But few people can say they are at the standards Bandler sets. Richard Bandler tells us repeatedly that he uses what the client brings to the session to support them, and cures clients of phobias, anxiety and low confidence in a very short period of time, often in front of a large audience.

So, How Does Bandler Do It?

Dr Richards Bandlers technique is complex, as can be seen on the thousands of youtube videos showing you the Bandler Model. I have researched hundreds of videos to look at the common techniques he uses with clients. This is a working progress the more I research Bandler the more I understand how complex his simple looking method is. The model below is just a sample of what Bandler does.

The Importance of Reframing

It was a normal day when the phone rang, Michelle a mother of two, was baking a cake that she had planned  to serve as a desert for a family meal. She knew something was wrong by the callers tone “whats happen to joe?” she asked, panic showing in her voice. Joe was Michelle’s eldest son, he had only recently passed his driving test.

 

Michelle later found out that a car had run a red light and driven into the side of Joe’s car causing Joe’s car to tip on its side, smashing the windscreen and knocking Joe out cold. Joe had immediately been rushed to hospital, and due to the severity of his injuries had been operated on within an hour of being rushed into the hospitals emergency room.

 

Michelle had arrived just as the surgery had ended. The consultant came out to discuss the operation with Michelle “the operation went well, the odd of survival of this type of operation is 90%” Michelle breathed a shy of relief.

 

The frame the doctor used “90% survival rate”, created a strong positive emotion. But what if the doctor gave the same information framed differently “the operation went well, but the mortality rate for this operation is 10%” This new frame would have created a different emotional response.

 

Creating emotional Frames

 

The information you receive creates a frame of reference, this frame evokes a particular emotional response. The same information framed differently will produce a different emotional response. As a life coach and hypnotherpaist, clients come to be with limiting beliefs and negative frames, by reframing their maps of the world the client can create more choices and new perspectives.

Our emotions drive us. Your emotional state filters the information we take in creating new emotional state. If you’re feeling angry, you will filter information through your “angry” state. As an example, you arrive at work on a Monday morning feeling angry. A colleague rushes over to you before you even have time to take your coat off and asks “where did you file that report?” The question, the anxiety of the colleague who is clearly in a rush and the expectation from the colleague is filtered though your “angry” state making you respond by snapping “don’t blame me if you cant find the report!!”

 

The same situation filtered through a “happy” state would create a different response “erm yes I filed it on Friday, did you check the cabinet labelled X?” The colleague sincerely thanks you as he runs off to check the cabinet he forgot to look in.

 

We are always looking for the meaning of things, if the colleague rushed over to me asking for the report…. he is Blaming me. But a change in state from angry to happy can change the frame and the meaning we perceive; if the colleague rushed over to me asking for the report he needs my help.

 

There are often many meaning to a single situation. By exploring these various perspectives, you can choose how you want to emotionally respond, helping to create in you new choices. This easy to learn skill can help you create control in many different situations. You can even check the perspective that you would take if you took on a new emotion “how would I reposed if I felt relaxed, happy or sad….?”

Recently a client came to see me to increase his confidence and self esteem. Within minutes of arriving the client had told me how “everyone hates me” This was a strong belief that was limiting his life. Because he thought that everyone hated him, he wouldn’t attend social gatherings, he wouldn’t meet new people and he had stopped going out, “rather that, then going out only to be rejected.”

 

When he told me that everyone hated him (his frame of reference) I challenged this by asking “everyone?” He though for a few seconds “well, not everyone my family like me“who else?” I asked “my friends, but I’ve known them since school.” Following this line of thought I replied “so are you trying to say that people who get to know you, like you?” puzzled he answered “I suppose so, my family like me and my friends from childhood like me, so maybe its just strangers who don’t like me?”

 

Often by challenging a clients generalisation you break their frame of reference creating a new perspective. I went on “have you ever met a stranger who became a friend?”
