What is Hypnotherapy?

You may ask a hypnotherapist “Are you going to make dance around the office like a chicken are you?” 

Often hypnotherapist are confused with stage hypnosis which is a form of entertainment, not therapy. A hypnotherapist uses hypnosis to help you move forward with your life, overcoming set backs and achieving your goals. Stage hypnosis uses hypnosis for entertainment. They ask extrovert people, especially those who are willing to play the clown to come up and do random acts on stage to amuse the audience.

Does hypnotherapy work? Yes.

When a hypnotherapist supports you to move forward, the key thing to remember is that you are in control of the whole session, you can open your eyes whenever you need to and you are aware of everything that is happening.

When in a hypnosis session you:

  • Will feel relaxed and in control
  • Can talk, move around or open your eyes when you need to
  • Feel in that place between sleep and awake with many people describing it as “a daydream like state”

Hypnosis Can Not:

  • Make you do anything you don’t want to do
  • Make you reveal anything you don’t want
  • Make overcome any fear or barrier unless you want to make a change

What Do You Need To Do To Get Motivated For Making a Change?

  • First you need to want to make a change. First write a list of all the barriers, issues and phobias in your life – anything you want to change.
  • Next, think about how your personal barriers affect you, your family, your career, your life and your future. Record the pain your issue is causing you.
  • Finally think about how you would like to live your life and write a list of all the positive differences you would have in your life if you were able to overcome your barriers and achieve your goals. Record the pleasure your changes will bring.

 

This quick exercise would have helped you feel emotional about your issue. A big part of hypnosis is helping you control your states. Hypnosis works by helping the phobic feel calm when they see as an example a spider. Or helping someone who wants to lose weight to feel disgusted towards fatty foods rather the desire.

 

Hypnosis helps you re-frame situations, deletes negative self talk, it gives you choices and puts the control back in your hands. The trance side of hypnosis is to help your mind visualise what you want, as it has been found to people can make changes quicker when in trance, as it shuts of the outside world, similar to that as a mediator, who concentrates internally rather then externally to help them relax fully.

WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?

Hypnotherapy, is therapy using hypnosis. A hypnotherapist will attempts to address your subconscious mind, using suggestion to create change. When being hypnotised you (the client) are in complete control. You are not a sleep and if you want to you can open your eyes whenever you feel the need to. And the therapist can’t make you do anything you don’t want to. 

A hypnotherapist will help you become deeply relaxed (in a daydream type of state) to enable you to use your imagination, to associate a new feeling to past events . The hypnotherapist will often use states and emotions, to associate a different feeling to an event IE feeling calm when you see a spider (for spider phobics)

The therapist will allow use coaching and solution focused question to re-frame past behaviours and to help you access your resources to achieve your new goals. 

Often clients have learnt ways of dealing with problems and will unconsciously operate the patterns they have installed without thinking, an example of this is when people eat because they feel sad. The hypnotherapist can break this old pattern and help you set up a new pattern at both the concious and unconscious level.

The therapist will also set you task and homework to complete between sessions. This is to help you take control back and to move forward achieving your goals quickly.

For people with mental health problems or people taking medication, you may first with to consult with your GP before booking a hypnotherapy session.

Where is your time line?

Think about something you did yesterday. Where did the picture of this event come from in your mind? Now think about an activity you started 2 days ago, where does this image start from? For most it will start in a different place. Do this for an event from 3 days ago, a week ago and even a month ago.

Do all your images and pictures originate from a different starting point? If you think of them all at the same time, do they form a line in relation to each other?

Now ask the same question for future events, do your future event images start from different points in your mind’s eye?

In most cases, if you align all your images from both the past and the future you will either have a selection of images creating a V shape or a straight line with past images coming from behind you and future events being in front of you?

Looking into your future

    1. Imagine you can see your future in front of you, a future where you are at your best and at your peak performance. A future where everything has gone well for you and the future has happened as you wish it would, with you achieving all your goals.
    2. Ask, what is the first image you can see in your future? Point to where this image originates from (ask them to point)
    3. Do this for several important future events, each one going future into the future, until you can see yourself in the future full of knowledge and life experiences.
    4. Holding on to the anchor-cord, walk down your time line at each future image; describe the event using VAK to help you become associated with the image.
    5. Frame each future event and leave a symbol on the timeline to represent each future vision.
    6. As you get to the end of your timeline, experiencing all the future positive events, taking on all the knowledge, feelings, images and sounds that ensures the future you is the best future you, you could be.
    7. Imagine you are the positive future you who has achieved all your goals, look back down your timeline to the present you. If you were the future you and you could meet the present you, what advice would you give yourself.
    8. Go back down your timeline, every time you pass a symbol representing your image, take the symbol with both hands and bring it to your chest, as you do this, gain all the knowledge and wisdom from this event.
    9. As you return to the present you, take a deep breath and breathe in all the goodness and experiences you have gained by going into your future. How has this experience changed your outlook on the future?
