Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance

Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance

A recent article on disabled-world.com discusses recent experiments that are proving that memories can be passed down from generation to generation. This means we may be born more prone to become phobic because our parents grandparents were.

“Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance means your environment may affect your genetics in ways that can be passed down to your children.” Research on twins have found that “Fear actually may be a partly inherited trait, one programmed into our genetic makeup”

There have already been several experiments on rodents backing up this finding “Mouse parents learned to associate the smell of orange blossoms with an electric shock. The children of these mice and their grandchildren startled in response to the scent, a sign of fear, even though they had never smelled the scent before in their lives” and to me it makes perfect sense.  All the creatures, plants and any living organism evolves depending on its environment. To evolve at a faster rate our genes can pass on messages of survival, to help keep us safe.

“Sperm cells alone have the ability to deliver the message of fear, according to Kerry Ressler and Brian Dias at Emory University.” Many phobics have phobic parents. If our genes carry the potential fear response to a certain stimuli, and due to our capacity to learn from observational learning, creating a phobia to a danger (spiders, snakes, heights) can be a faster process to that of a none phobic family.

As a survival tool this DNA teaching model can keep us, as a species, alive for longer. Each generation can learn from their genes, potential threats and dangers, rather  then having each generation make and learn from dangerous mistakes that can be life threatening. This unconscious response to a stimuli that could a real threat, maybe another way species survive.

I have often wondered how plants evolve and adapt to survive with certain insects or animals. Often in the plant  world a particular species of plant will create a relationship with an insect that over millions of years becomes a coexistence. Is DNA in plants teaching new buds how to act?

Dr. Hettema said, “Now can say that the fear conditioning process in humans is controlled, at least to some extent, by genetic factors. Between one-third and one-half of the fear conditioning process appears to be inherited.”
