Procrastination can feel like a physical barrier

 

 

Part of you wants to action action, but another part, a stronger part of you wants to sit and do nothing.

 

Even when the action would achieve a positive outcome IE going to a job interview would get you a well paid job, you still procrastinate. This is because procrastination isn’t a logical response, its an emotional pull

Step 1 To Beat Procrastination

 

The perceived action, when you are procrastinating, feels like a big task

 

Even going to the gym. You don’t think “lets go to the gym” instead your mind tricks you through a procrastinating perspective “i have to get changed, then find my gym shoes, then get some money to pay the cashier, then i will have to choose which workout to undertake, then I will…..”

 

When procrastinating you make one small easy task seem big and overwhelming.

 

When you find yourself breaking one task down into a million steps, stop, take a deep breath and state the one task “I will go to the gym in the next 5 minute” then take action

Step 2 To Beat Procrastination

 

Procrastinators often visualize themselves failing, in pain or  looking stupid

 

Its these negative thoughts that create no action. To take action, use an old mind-trick. Imagine the thought as a picture, make the picture black and white and put a border around it.

 

Slowly, at first, move the framed black and white picture away from your minds eye, future and future away until its a dot on the horizon. Once its a dot on the horizon, notice how it no longer bothers you.

 

Now imagine yourself doing the task/action and enjoying it – this will create motivation

Step 3 To Beat Procrastination

 

Reward Yourself.

 

Once complete (or when you achieve a milestone) you need to reward yourself. This creates double pleasure – the pleasure from completing the task and the pleasure from your reward which creates more motivation

 

Also tell other people how successful you have been, this again increases motivation but also installs  commitment to do the task again, as we know that our friends will ask about it next time they see you

Social Proof

 

 

Because we as humans, survive though our group mentality, we had a subconscious bias. This bias is formed through other peoples actions – we are sheep following other sheep.

 

Because we learn from observational learning, we take our cues from others.   If others party we feel we should party too. If we see people losing weight through exercise, that is the means in which you will attempt to lose weight (you might not of even considered that you wanted to lose weight)

 

Even our opinions and beliefs are influenced by what others do. At the extreme, social proof can cost someone a life. If someone is seen in the street dieing, but everyone ignores the injured party and walks past the, most people will follow suit, and ignore the individual who needs help.

 

You will read this and won’t believe the truth behind this subconscious response. Google “social proof experiment” for more evidence

“I don’t like green grass”

 

 

Because we often act like sheep, following our leader (the group majority) we do as others do, even if we don’t like it.

 

The sheep might not like a particular type of green grass, but because the rest of the flock are munching away, he does too.

 

We humans are the same (in the majority) we act as others do, we follow their example, we stick to what we believe is the norm. This is why people need a new life plan. To feel fulfilled you need your life plan to meet the criteria that will make you happy, joyful and fulfilled.

 

Reflect on your life and find 3 things you need to change, 3 things that will empower you, creating additional happiness. Step out of the habit of normality and try something new, the thing you have always wanted to do.

When you set new goals, especially goals that you don’t really want to work towards (because these small goals have a different focus to large objective) you focus is this task is going to be difficult, boring or painful, its this negative thought process that creates procrastination

 

Instead of thinking just about the goal, you need to focus on the lifestyle you want. If you want to lose weight, you should focus on having a healthy lifestyle. If you’re sick of having no money, you need to imagine yourself living an affluent lifestyle.

 

 

The goal is the step towards a life style that will make you feel fulfilled. Don’t focus on the goal; to go to the gym 3 times a week or to work a 60hr week to increase your income, instead imagine the life you will have

Get Ready To Take Action

 

Pain is a big motivator.

 

When you feel yourself losing momentum you must swap the focus of “giving up” or “putting it off until tomorrow” (tomorrow never comes) to the focus that first helped you set the goal. This is often something painful, something you want to avoid (which is why you set a new goal)

 

Remember what it was that made you desire change, imagine living with this “thing” for the rest of your life. As the pain builds up, think of one little thing you can do right now, just one thing, toward your new goal

Every-time you take a step closure to your goal, reward yourself

 

Your reward doesn’t have to be a physical gift instead the reward can something small.  Maybe you have a chart of the steps that you took. With every new step taken, you add a “blue dot” or and symbol to your chart to show your progress.

 

Your reward can be self-congratulation, a pat on your back. It can be simple as giving yourself a tick, phrase or a smile. This little reward scheme actually has a big impact, you feel more satisfied, more fulfilled.

Talk about what you know about

 

Great orators, influential speakers and confident presenters all have one thing in common. They discuss subjects that they are passionate about.

 

As a new speaker don’t be tempted to deliver a speech in a style that isn’t natural to you. Rather than picking a subject that you need to research in detail, choose a talk on something that means something to you.

 

Confidence comes from being comfortable in your subject matter. When your mind goes of track, you can easily pull it back as your knowledge on this topic is immense.

Step 2

 

The two P’s – prepare and practice

 

As a coach people come to me to increase their speaking confidence.  At the session start I ask what they did to prepare for their speech. Time and time again, speakers tell me that they wrote a speech hours before the presentation!

 

As a public speaker myself, who is high in confidence, I would be scared if I had to go on stage with no preparation.  

 

To increase confidence you need to practice, practice, practice. If you fail to prepare you prepare to fail.

Step 3

 

Create structure

 

There are many structures, strategies and methods you can use to deliver your speech. Certain styles suit particular speeches. The key when it comes to confidence, is to choose a structure.

 

A structure keeps you on point, creates a boundary which stops you waffling and can  be used as a memory aid.

 

Experienced speakers will take this one step further and mix rhetorical devices, changes in tone and the use of gestures  in with their speech structure

 

 

To increase your confidence when it comes to speaking in front of an audience you need to go back to basics. First find a subject matter you known well, prepare and practice your speech and use a mixture of structures and speech techniques to take your speech to the next level.

As a hypnotherapist I have helped thousands of clients to increase confidence for the delivery of presentations, stage confidence and  for anytime you are the center of attention.

 

 

I am always surprised about the amount of people who fear public speaking. In many poles, public speaking is often voted more fearful than spiders, heights and even death.

 

 

Why do people fear public speaking? Often your first introduction to orating creates your frame of reference. For many this frame of reference is created when you are asked in school to read in front of the class. This new experience creates fear which is only increased when your classmates start to titter and laugh.

 

When you are asked to speak in front of a class as an adult, you remember this negative experience. Because anxiety is the frame of reference to public speaking, to increase confidence all you need to change is the emotional association.

 

This article will teach you three simple ways to evolve fear into focused confidence

Changing Your History  

 

Memories are manipulated

 

It is well known that many of our memories have been distorted. For many stage phobics they remember a time when they were highly embarrassed on stage.

 

To delete this fear you need to manipulate the associated memory. First change the emotion attached to this memory. Imagine yourself in the same situation but feeling relaxed, see yourself stood in a relaxed stance and notice everything, all those little quirks, that you have when you are relaxed and confidence.

 

Next turn your attention to the audience. Imagine the audience being in s state of intrigue. See each audience member listening, nodding along with you, even laughing at your well timed jokes.   

 

This new memory is you at your best, you feeling relaxed, you at your most confidence.

 

Replay this memory over and over again in your mind’s eye, until when you think of public speaking your new frame of reference is this new confident memory.

Spinning Confidently

 

When you feel anxious where does this feeling originate from inside of you? Do you feel it in your stomach, chest or head?

 

Does your feeling of anxiety travel up or down? Does it spin forwards or backwards? What colour is your anxiety feeling?

 

Once you are aware of the submodalities of your anxiety feeling, you can then take control and make a real change.

 

Next imagine pushing this spinning feeling of anxiety outside of you, so you can see it spinning in front of you. Now, flip this feeling back on itself, so it spins in the opposite direction.

 

Spin it faster and faster until the feeling changes colour. At this stage push it back inside yourself replacing the old feeling, and allow it to continue to spin this way inside of you.

 

Think about this feeling and notice how different you feel.

Kill the Never in Your Head

 

Most nervous public speakers have a devil in their head, whispering negative affirmations that increase fear.

 

You need to destroy the negative self talk. Confident orators only speak positively to themselves, stating their strengths, skills and abilities.

 

Focus on the negative self talk. Hear the words you say to yourself. Turn the words from auditory to visual; see the words in front of you. Become aware of the font, size and colour of the negative self talk.

 

Imagine the words visually coming out of your mouth. As they release from your mouth imagine them becoming weak, floppy, see them drop to the floor and smash into millions of pieces.

By manipulating the words you say to yourself you will manipulate the associated emotional response.
