NLP is Fake
As a Manchester based NLP Life Coach and Hypnotherapist I am often asked “is NLP real?” For years NLP practitioners have boasted about the rapid and lasting results NLP techniques produce. Critiques on the other hand have challenged this statement, asking “how many of these results are down to the placebo effect? And what is the retention of these so called cures?”
The question to be answered is, “is NLP Fake?” Recent research in neuroscience is answering this question, as scientist monitor what happens in the brain at the neuron level when NLP techniques are employed. There is much more research being carried out in this area with neuroscientist monitoring the brain when hypnosis, nlp, mindfulness and meditation is used
Anchoring is a famous NLP technique that has a foundation from classic conditioning Pavlov’s Dog Recent research in neuroscince has found that the Amygdala region of the brain is responsible for creating habits The Amygdala Central Nucleus: A New Region Implicated in Habit Learning as this region releases dopamine as a reward which can become addictive. It has been found that you can retrain your brain to create new habbits through anchoring and conditioning.
Rapport is one of the 4 pillars of NLP. Without rapport, many NLP practitioners believe that outcome cannot be achieved with a client. NLP techniques such as mirroring and Pacing and Leading are designed to increase rapport with a client.
Mirror Neurons have recently been discovered by neuroscientist that give credit to the mirroring technique. Mirror neurons (discovered by scientist in the 1990’s) allow us to feel the emotions someone else feels when completing an action. Researchers have found that when we observe an individual in a task (this could be stamping their toe accidentally on the floor) or see a facial micro expression parts of our own brain fire up as they would if we completed the task ourselves (we feel the same pain they do), even though we are only watching the task and not completing the task ourselves.
Future Pacing is used with many clients to check that the therapy as worked. By visualizing yourself in the future, mentally rehearsing the future experience you can create new emotional memories that act as a frame of reference. The power behind this technique is due to our brain not knowing the different between a memory and real-life – new research is discovering the powers behind this technqiue – you still feel the same emotion
Emotions and Submodalities. Asking a client to describe their emotion in colour, temperature, speed, direction and then changing each submodality changes the representation to the stimulus. Now scientific studies are looking at this in more detail; For the study, more than 700 men and women from Finland and Taiwan were shown two silhouettes of bodies alongside emotionally charged words, stories, movies, or facial expressions. They were asked to mark in the bodily regions on the silhouettes where they felt a physical sensation response to each emotional image. SOURCE
